Show her just how much you love her and buy her something safe and sensible. Get her a VW Golf diesel.

Anyway, what does she need a car for? You must have a huge kitchen. :)

Then the answer is simple. Keep the existing family car to ferry them around.

You forget about schlepping the family around and get something new that you and your wife can have some 'couple' time in.

Like a two seater sports car with a big engine.

... all you need is a hotel and a baby-sitter ... ;)

Are getting rid of both the E-class and the Audi for this new car? If not then why not use the other car on lacrosse days and buy a sports car.

If you don't have kids yet, then this would be the perfect time as there is plenty of time for 4x4's when you have kids, plus an economical 4x4 won't provide excitement.

Or other simple solution...tell the Mrs to take up a new sport, which uses smaller kit.

see post #68. Is this thread now stuck in a perpetual loop? ;)

some Constraints:

1/ Must NOT be mercedes:ban:
2/ should be fairly exclusive (no £40-50k new car is exclusive)
3/ should have a light interior
3/ few different schools of thought are a 4x4 or a sports grand tourer
4/ should have a smart elegant style, but be of higher quality (I guess that rules out a 4x4)
5/ budget max really £40-£50k
6/ Should not have stigma of an old man/old womans car (worry less about what other people think)
7/ not a far eastern brand nor american, thus prob british or german (Italian's make some nice exclusive cars)

So, are we any further forward?
Sounds to me you need to buy a second-hand sports car.
I'd spend a bit more time thinking what you really want the car to be, as there seem to be quite a few contradictions in your requirements. :)

I look at that and see this

Jar-Jar-Binks1-460x250.jpg

I had a sit in a pre-production XJ..pre-production...and it was a gorgeous place to sit, a very nice car indeed.

I would probably have bought one but due to having standard sunroof, don't fit in.

Got to concur with this - to not consider the XJ (or even XK) is madness, given your criteria.

The XJ is one of the best ways to spend £40-50k and it drives unbelievably well. It is a far superior car to the E-coupe that I bought (with the possible exception of build quality, but the difference isn't vast and our E is the best built car I've ever bought). 'Why didn't you buy one then?', I here you ask....

Well, the car is strictly my other halfs and, as she is still a couple of years away from hitting the big 3-0, she refused to drive an XJ as her daily car (despite being able to drive my SLS for at least 1/3 of her driving!). I do actually understand where she's coming from but other than that, it's a great piece of kit - Jaguars best car by a mile, which is expected given its also their newest design.

ETA - sorry, you may have already considered a Jag but I've not read the whole thread end to end!

Was the Audi not up to expectations?

u saw it Barry.. it looks amazing in my eyes, drives so well, stylish and unique..

but it just drinks way too much for an Audi.. even for an S5.. i swear it feels like it has a fuel leak, and its been check top to bottom, and its fine, but just everytime u drive it, u see the fuel gauge change so fast its disturbing.. i swear an SLS is more efficient lol

ps. we dont have kids as a few references have come about ferrying family around, just two of us, or with friends, makes it more obviously, but they can take the bus if need be lol

Yes, it's a lovely looking car and soooo fast!! :D (I remember well...:D )

I drove a Toyota GT86 the other day and I tell you, that car drives a dream!! Just like a rally car :D A true successor to the old Celica GT4s, though not as quick.

Not suggesting you buy one, but it is worth a drive sometime!

wow.. what a day..

so looked into the xk8. a cabrio actually.. totally stunning car, however the boot is totally useless as are the back seats.. would need to be the coupe and the coupe was not liked by her lordship..

looked at the range rover, sport and vogue.

Vogue is way too expensive, but is an amazing car.. the s class will have some serious competition, even though its a 4x4, its a ridiculous jump fwd from the previous gen.

so with the sport, its more within budget, but due to the new model, it really has aged over night and looks very busy and clumsy...

we have asked for a very good new offer on existing production stock, as new production has now ceased.

i would be looking at a hefty discount to offset additional accelerated depreciation we would incur.. lets see what they come back with to us...

Anyway i am tired.. but seriously, this new range rover vogue is superb.. when the price is right and the used market starts to fill up, i will be looking at one for sure.. aim is around 2015/16

in mean time, waiting on the rr sport, and also looking into the bmw more

Friend has just had his new RR Vogue SE and was given a GFV of £47,000 after 3 years and 36k miles.

Just to give you an idea of the price in three years time.
