clk coupe purchase

To be aware, the steering can feel like its going to the kerb - this isn't unusual on Mercedes as they are very road camber sensative

Good point, 100% agreed.

This shouldn't happen in the middle lane of a motorway though.

Come the test drive, I'll take the car on various roads to be on the safe side

I have never noticed my CLK pulling to the left.

Seems to be common occurrence across the board, the factors involved are endless though, road camber, poor alignment, tyres, road conditions etc.

If it's a private seller they may not let you test drive it without proof of fully comp insurance and proof of ID. Your own insurance will only cover for 3rd party risks for driving other peoples cars.

I am fully comp :)

I wouldn't buy a car without test driving it, although the risks involved are understood, it's something that the seller has to account for if they plan on selling the car...

Yeah I agree if the seller does allow test drive it would imply to me he/she has something to hide

Don't forget that if you HPI it, you can get free insurance for a week.
Basically it is so that they can give you an insurance quote, but there is no obligation to sign up.

This is starting to sound like a goer :)

If you DO get the wheels aligned, make sure that the person doing it knows it is AMG sport as the wheels are staggered on these.

Good luck.

I have only sold 3 cars privately and the buyers never asked if they could test drive them, but they were all not worth more than £1k as usually I only get rid of cars if they become money pits.

Certainly is, looking forward to the viewing!

Are you based in Coventry, which garages would you recommend for servicing the merc, alignment etc

sts tyre pros have the corghi alignment machine there based in Warwick i've used them before for a previous car I had but its only good as the operator who is doing the job

When you say staggered in what respect?

Wow, interesting fact, never knew that! Is it a certain company or all HPI checking services? :thumb:

I don't dispute the fact that some people would buy cars blind folded, but I have come across this only once in my life, where the owner of the car that I was looking at has suggested that they would take me out in the car, performing anything I'd ask for but not allowing me to drive the car. Needless to say my interest was lost right away & I have just walked away.

Most others were happy to let me drive, as a seller, I would make that judgement on first contact and the appearance/condition of the car that the buyer arrives in, mine was spotless.

No matter how hard it was, I had to allow the buyer to test drive my car upon sale, luckily it was the first person viewing has bought the car there and then after the test drive.

Many would have preference to a hunter 3D machine, but as you've rightly pointed out, it is all about the person who is doing the alignment.

Staggered means that the wheel setup consists of different widths.

The rear wheels are wider than front.

I service it myself. By that, I mean that oil and filter changes are easily done on these using a topsider - twenty minutes max and (pretty) clean hands too. Plugs/filters etc are simple to get at.
Jay at Mercland is the closest - great reputation for being fair and quality of service.
There is (or was) a place on Lythalls Lane - just on the bend. A bit rough and ready but the guys know their stuff.

For tyres, I have always used Brittannia, but they did **** up my alignment as above by tracking it up as a 'standard' clk. To their credit, they replaced the tyres at no cost.
As you say, it's not just the equipment, but the operator that matters.

By staggered, the rear wheels are MUCH wider that the fronts. They look great!

Edit: just saw your reply (and Litcan beat me to it) It is HPI that do the free insurance. Don't know if anyone else does it.

:wallbash: See if they (Mercedes) are prepared to blank out the personal details on the invoice, this way no personal information is shared.

I asked them to do that, they still refused!
