De-badging method

Fun??? What you supposedly got offended with me writing is not really comparable to what you wrote to be fair.

Fun fun fun...

Debaging is done for two reasons...because you have the base car and because you have the top car.

It's like those people who have "cheap" car and excuse themselves by saying their clients would not like to see them in something flash, and the same reason someone in a flash car says they have to, because their clients expect it.

Drive what you want, don't make excuses.

Sometimes debadging is for cleaner lines, such as on the CLS...but usually its vanity.

The only people who care are those who do it...and those who know they've done it...most of the general public know very little about cars...and don't care.

A good method is the hair drier and floss trick. Me...I just pulled them off.

I've seen one recently on an ML CDI 4-matic and it barely had enough room for all of it - let alone the .com it was missing.

Hey, everyone can have one.

Doesn't make it a fact though...

Ironically...that's a fact.:D

This isn't forum appropriate - why would you post stuff like this?

My sincere apologies guys, sorry if offended, Its a typical northern brother-in-law joke, and you are right, not appropriate for this section of the forum.

Apologies once again.

Ive debadged twice before. 1 when I had a 1.2 badge on my Polo, got rid of that smartish. The other when I had a Cougar and changed the Ford badge to the Cougar badge that Ford sold. It just looked so much better in everyway.

I soaked a cloth in hot water, held it over the badge until it went cool and then yanked. It came away relatively easily. Some Autoglym super resin polish sorted out remaining residue and that was that.

TBH...MB do badge too much. It's a marketing tool to sell more of the larger engined variants...Ford stopped it many years ago with some models.

A nerve has been touched...not sure why...but why boast about a £100k+ purchase of a depreciating asset and not expect a little come back.

Hi eihtur,

No one in their right mind, well as far as I know anyway, would actually boast about losing at least 50% of a vehicles value over a 3-year period. Because that’s what is will lose over that period, if not more. I am very well aware of that. However, my intension is to keep this vehicle for a very long time, because it will be the very last car that I ever buy, that way, it probably doesn’t feel as bad to me as it would have been, Equally, as I stated to MB-BTurbo in an earlier post, the S600 I looked at and chose not to buy, for obvious reasons, that vehicle with the similar option list as the W12 was in fact nearly 25k more than the Audi, but yet, that would also lose a similar amount, if not more.

I do tend to keep my vehicles for a very long time, for example, the 230CE (W124) that I bought in August 1990, I still have that car – 22 years down the line and 137,000 miles on the clock, and still going strong. I use this car nearly every day, and especially for work travel. This car stands me at nothing now. The CL, I have had for almost eight years now and have no intension of selling that either. The value of that has also plummeted beyond comprehension, given its original cost. But I will keep it and certainly get my monies worth out of it. In another 5 years, that CL will be worth absolutely nothing.

The only thing that has gained any value is the Harley Davidson that I bought in 1997. I have had that bike now for 15 years and believe it or not, because of its rarity, it has significantly increased in value and considered as an asset, but I would never sell it anyway, because the chances are, I would never get anything similar to replace it.

I don’t expect to get criticised for that, on the contrary, people on this forum are very well aware of what vehicles cost and what the depreciation factors are, why would you expect to get backlash for that.

Anyway, the brother-in-law joke was not meant to offend you, yes, it was in bad taste, but it was written in jest, so my sincere apologise for that. It was an old Bernard Manning joke that I heard him tell many many years ago now. Hope you accept the apology and we can move on.

Hi MB-BTurbo,

Please do not assume that what you said to me excuses you for one moment, it does not. Your comments and views were on a different scale proportion to what I have relayed as a Joke, granted, the context of mine were in bad taste and not appropriate for this area of the forum. If you can’t read in to what is clearly written, as a joke, then we may as well not speak to each other again. But please, don’t come over as you have been clearly offended and that now makes it alright and vindicates you and your actions so you can have a stab back at me.

Your views did not only offend me, but a great deal many of other people. You graciously apologised to me and I said that it wasn’t necessary. I did not make such an issue from it and we moved on, as you know, we have discussed matters since then in an amicable and friendly fashion, I do not hold any grudge whatsoever against you for your comments, otherwise, we would never have communicated on from that scenario. I hope that we can still remain forum friends, and as far as I am concerned, I have apologised to said parties and that is the end of the matter for me. I hope you agree.

Hi Forum Members.

I would really appreciate it if you could please find the time to read the whole of this post. But do you know what guys, and for what its worth, I’ve decided to give myself a LIFETIME BAN from this forum, and with immediate effect. This is and will be my very last post on this site. And do you know what, it’s a form of a relief for me really. Theres an old phrase really that comes to mind here, and many of you know it, it states, “Let him without sin cast the first stone.” How many of you lot can honestly say and put your hand up to that. Lets face it guys; you are not exactly the “Mother Teresa’s” of this world, are you, and yet, you would think so given and gauging some of your over-reactions yesterday over a “genuine” joke that I put up that fit in with something that I wrote to a member. Granted, it should have never have been put there, and should have been confined in the joke section, but we all make mistakes, and we move on. There was never any intent on my behalf to insult the individual concerned, and I apologised to him personally in a separate post. My apology is not enough – fine, deal with it. That joke is as old as the hills, it’s not something new, it’s like the old mother-in-law jokes and the like. If you laugh at the joke, then equally, you’re considered as bad as the person telling it.

I don’t use bad language and swear guys on any forums, and, I am unlikely to do so here either. But I will be extremely blunt with some of my comments, take it or leave it, this is my overall perception and view of how I see this forum and some individuals who seem hell bent on upsetting and winding people up, unnecessarily I may add, and totally uncalled for. It is extremely hard to gauge a person’s age when you communicate with them on sites such as this, especially, when you do have young individuals, as it is clear they do portray immaturity. The silly comments and innuendos and the like etc. To some, its ofensive and I agree.

The thread itself in my view has obviously brought out the worst in some people, its obvious by gauging people’s reactions. It originally started life as a very simple question and got totally blown out of all proportion. However, give this some thought, the people dishing out the dirt on here actually own a Mercedes Benz - Fact. Why they actually own a Mercedes Benz is another matter. However, these people have a perception of others and made a formal judgement with regards to them de-badging their vehicles and viewed their comments accordingly, and yet, why are they so different, well, they are not.

Question - Why do they own that Mercedes Benz that’s sits on their drive, or come to think of it, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, or any other premium brand motorcar come to that matter. Its quite simple really, they themselves want to be viewed and perceived by other people, probably and maybe less fortunate than themselves, or it could be the fact of the old cliché of, “keeping up with the Jones’s” syndrome. No one forced them to buy that Mercedes Benz, they could have bought a Ford, GM, or anything really, but no, they wanted that Mercedes for the simple reason that they themselves wanted to be viewed and perceived that they were doing well and look at me now syndrome - I own a Mercedes; therefore I must be doing well.

Look at this here guys, this statement is actually beyond belief, make up your own mind, this to me says it all, and this is fact. Post No 124 is from one of the main offenders on this thread - MB-BTurbo. He actually states this in print after his critical comment of other individuals for doing exactly the same thing.

Quote MB-BTurbo

“Ive debadged twice before. 1 when I had a 1.2 badge on my Polo, got rid of that smartish. The other when I had a Cougar and changed the Ford badge to the Cougar badge that Ford sold. It just looked so much better in everyway.”

Lets do a little bit of a critical analysis of his comments here and then you make up your own minds and opinion of him and his comment of others members on here.

Firstly, he actually states that he had a 1.2 Polo and he de-badged it smartish - Fact. Why did he de-badge it smartish. Was it the fact that he felt ashamed and embarrassed that he only had got a 1.2 Polo, the answer must have be yes, for the simple reason he removed the badges – smartish. And he removed the badges – smartish, because other motorist would not know that it was only a 1.2 Polo, therefore, his perception was that they don’t know what I am driving as they can’t tell the difference from a higher end model of the same model vehicle, therefore saving him face and embarrassment of what the other motorists may have thought or perceived of him. – Fact

The second part of his quote above actually states that he had a Ford Cougar and he deliberately, by his own admission, changed the Ford badge to that of a Cougar badge, because he said it looked so much better and the vehicle then sold. Ask yourself this question guys, MB-BTurbo has just commited the same act here that he has openly critised our forum members for doing the same thing. He actually goes on to say that the Ford Cougar looked so much better. Please refer to his Post No 83 below, and I quote,

Quote MB-BTurbo

“Well done for actually being bothered to read all of that Colin.

For me it is simple. Its all about status, snob value and how you are perceived that gets people all passionate on this topic.

a) Those that debadge because their cars are base models do so for obvious reasons - to make it look like they might have got something better and dont want to admit to others that they only just managed to afford the marque in the first place.

b) Those that debadge due to aesthetic reasons and often have middle or top models do so because they prefer the looks but get frustrated at the thought of others perceiving their cars as base models trying to look better and will set out in the pursuit of educating people that fact, incase, Heaven forbid their car should be mistaken for a lowly 1.8 or what ever.

c) Those that debadge higher model cars to make them sleepers do so for the same reason. 'ah haa, you thought you had a better car than me but Im the one who is richer than you, look at me speeding past you little minion'.

d) Those that 'up badge' frustrate those that have the higher models as they simply 'havent paid for the same privilege' and 'how dare they try and mingle with us higher mortal'.

Rightly or wrongly this is my perception and how I interpret peoples reaction.

Honestly guys, I can’t actually believe that MB-BTurbo has actually put in print the above comments and then openly criticised our members on this forum when he has actually done the same thing himself, and for the very similar reasons. This is way beyond my comprehension I’m afraid, and it is one of the very reasons that I don’t want to be a part of this forum any further. These are the type of two-faced people that unfortunately we have to deal with; he should actually be ashamed of himself for criticising our members for doing as he has, and then he has the nerve to get on his high horse with me and openly critise me for my belief and views.

As some of you will know me on here, I have been a member on here for quite some time now and contributed to various threads, I have been an engineer for 42 years, and of those 42 years have been Principal Engineer at my current job, however, what you could not possibly have known, that prior to JLR, I was actually employed by the home office in the Forensic Science Department and as a Forensic Consulting Engineer, whereby, my sole duties and responsibilities involved working with Insurance Companies and the like on the very elements of insurance fraud and deception, to name but a few. I won’t go on about it here as it is totally irrelevant, suffice it to say, I do know exactly what I am talking about and have the history and skill-sets behind me to prove just that.

Little did MB-BTurbo and the likes of him and his so-called clever buddies on here think that they had got one over on me, well I’m afraid gentlemen, you really are sadly mistaken. Should I have decided to do so, then I could have actually torn this thread to pieces if I would have wanted. I can’t really be that bothered to be perfectly honest, it really is of little interest. If there is any member on here is of the same mindset as I am, then do it for yourself, you will soon get the measure of who is a genuine member and who is not. Look back and refer to MB-BTurbo posts as above Post No 83 and Post No 124 and form your own views.

To all the genuine MB Enthusiasts on here, I wish you all the very best now and in the future.

Take Care

Best Regards,

Dash1

Dash1, I'm sorry to have to say the feeling's mutual. You have taken what was a perfectly reasonable thread and tried to escalate it into World War Three with your utterly pointless comments and observations.

You joined this forum with the promise of giving members the benefit of your 42 years of engineering experience, yet despite an enthusiastic response and support for the site's administrators, I can find precious little evidence of this ever having come to pass. There is, however, evidence that you are quite temperamental and have a tendency to start laying down the law with little or no justification.

That's not how this forum works. People make contributions, and others choose freely whether or not to respond. That may be to agree or disgaree, or it may be to raise a new but related point. There's no right and wrong (other than as determined by the moderators) - people are expressing their opinions, which can be challenged politely, and members will ultimately decide whose opinion carries most weight.

This was a thread about badging. Can you imagine if this had been about something less trivial, religion or world affairs for example.

Dash, your comments made towards me in post 81 were not exactly nicely put and contributed to my flippant remarks that I had intended to be read in a humorous manner, to which I then apologised due to you taking such great offence. I have not at any time referred to your inane and highly hypocritical comments aimed at me and others on here and decided to just go with the flow (except for my reply to that highly disturbing post that you made to eihter). I have not risen to the challenge despite you happily dishing out what you are too fragile to take (and then some) and quite simply, you have not been someone who has warranted my time or attention.

I hope you take on board the comments made to you by various people on here and can move on.

You sound, to me at least, a little bitter and humourless. This thread was about opinions, and it is clear that you considered only your had any validity.

I know you feel strongly about badges, but your abrasive and loadsamoney certainly didn't endear you to me.

Just about everyone here has responsible jobs, many more than yours, so your bragging didn't help. Even if you did become chief engineer at JLR, aged 15.

Enjoy the W12.

Maaaaaaaaan, that dude needs help.

Even the Dalai Lama would be saying "WTF?".

:D

Was this the technical education subsection he said he would do? I read that he got a CD stuck that he couldn't get out...I take it that wasnt it.

I'm sure that you'll agree that anyone that pays £125k for an Audi A8 W12 needs our compassion, and we shouldn't mock the afflicted.

You do realise I wouldn't have even looked at this thread had it not been for your entry in the caption competition. :D

After persevering through Dash1's posts, I almost expected them to be signed off in a 'Points of View' style ie;
