Engine missing

Silly question, but is it an auto?
Does it just feel dead for a couple of seconds?

It's a manual.

It "holds back" and doesn't go anywhere, makes a noise as if it wants to go but somethings holding it back and then it gets released or I take off the gas and try again. Would love to get to the root of the problem!

I have the same problem in my Auto S211 and have been told it is the gear box oil and filters needing changed, I wonder if this could apply to a manual as well:confused:

Suppose it could do! Be good to get some background on this....!

How old is the air mass?

To be honest I don't know, don't remember seeing a receipt for one flicking through the paperwork....

Check if its an original bosch one... out of interest how many miles has this engine got?

Your going to need to get it on a star machine and get the codes read... the specialist can also then tell you if your existing MAF is ok, and can maybe pinpoint weather its a fuelling or air issue

Had a look at the prices of MAF's, ranging from £80 through to £192!

I wouldn't invest in a crap (cheap) MAF because it will result in you spending more money.

If you got the codes read it will immediately tell you if the MAF is at fault. Like when my car felt weak it was because the car had 2 error messages suggesting a dud MAF. Dont just go throwing money at an MAF til you really know its at fault.

I'll try Mercedes, or Mercare might be cheaper than the main dealer :)

Get the Bosch number off the existing one and ring around a few local Bosch agents.

Very "blonde" question but want to make sure I am looking at the right part. Is it the unit situated part way on the pipe from my air box? And should it have a dead end part to it?

If yours is a facelift, it will be close to the throttle body

ah.... so not A111 098 02 83 ?

Yes is facelift being '99.

or on here? Diagram

0000941948 - ...no 8 on the diagram. On your model, facing the front of the car with the bonnet up look down the right hand side of the radiator and you will see it alongside the radiator.. It is inline on the pipe heading to the throttle body.

This is a Bosch unit and you will buy it far cheaper if you ring around a few Bosch agents.

Got the part number and it is an original Bosch unit: 0280 217 114.

Rang Mercare in Plymouth and they charge £45 to plug it in to their computer, about right?

What exactly "goes" on these to prevent them working? Just out of curiosity.

The element on the sensor inside the air flow meter (its like a small chit) isn't built to last for the entire duration of the car, it gets 'used up' and over time it becomes more and more inaccurate and insensitive as it should be, if that makes sense.

hi gina,
if your car has 157k on the clock, and you cant find anything regard to the mas being replaced, there is a fairly strong possibility that this is the cause as i mentioned earlier in the thread.

If you go to GSF or Euro car parts they are about £100 and you just unplug old ms and plug in new one.

Even if its not the MAS i would imagine your old one wont be far from going anyway... so its worth wile doing this as a matter of cause...

MAF's usually cause rough idle's and horrible drivability, she's describing it to be fine but it 'misses' at 3-4k rpm.

When my MAF was faulty it never did this.
