If the Europeans really don't want the British to spend billions of € in their country don't go.Southern European countries depend of tourists in general to keep cafes restaurants open as the locals generally don't frequent these types of establishments.I can only talk about Portugal with any authority but it's clear that the locals are outbid to rental apartments for short term lettings. In our apartment block many of the apartments are left unoccupied and most owners are only looking for capital gains over the years.
We have American friends that rent two apartments to ensure they have an apartment to go to when the tenancy agreement runs out on the flat they are living in.
Unfortunately it's the law of supply and demand raising it's ugly head and creating resentment with the locals who have to rent property out of town.
It's so bad that people who rent property will have invite " friends " back for a coffee as those friends will try to find the owner and offer more cash than the current occupants pay.
