F1 2024

but they should have been thinking of the vestiges of a chance for the World Drivers' championship
Arguably for the team the Constructors Championship is more important, so the order of the 1-2 is irrelevant if it helps them manage the drivers, but point taken.

messed up his usual level of over-aggression and lost control of his car. He overcooked it.
I’ve said it before, and while I sincerely hope it doesn’t happen, MV’s excessive aggression and lack of sense of personal responsibility stands a good chance of resulting in the death of another driver or himself.

Frankly, it’s only a mixture of the superb engineering skills of the car designers and good fortune that has prevented it happening already.

Arguably .....

In their hearts the teams know the WDC is more important. Yes the WCC means money and internal status. But in the real world outside nobody remembers the WCC.

I think if you gave Mr Horner or Mr Wolff the choice between winning either the WDC or the WCC then they'd take the former every time.

If Verstappen had been able to turn into the corner he might have a point.

But he wasn't turning in after the lockup.

My view is that Verstappen was fed up being behind and was going to barge past - and actually messed up his usual level of over-aggression and lost control of his car. He overcooked it.
He really should take his own advice IMG_0714.png

Agreed. But that’s not where McLaren are just yet - they’re close but their main concern at the present time is their need to manage two very talented drivers, either of whom has the talent to deliver the WDC in the future.

MV saying over the radio to his team "OK, so you can just drive people off the track then?" made me laugh out loud.

Baffled by McLaren giving the race to Piastri. A hollow victory for his first F1 win that will leave a bad taste in his mouth forever

Max's radio traffic was a little telling....

As was Lando's, but in terms of what he didn't say rather than what he did.

Point was made by Piastri not being able to catch him, and then if you can't say anything nice ...

And agreed, F1 has become a race series again!

It may be that Piastri was driving within imposed limits whereas Norris was not. But if he had genuinely chased Norris and got within a second or two then that would have made a point.

At the moment, to me, it looks like Norris is a less aggressive driver on track than Piastri but at the moment is the faster of the two over race distance.

My feeling is that McLaren have been stupid today.

They have made tactical mistakes in previous races. They made tactical mistakes in this race. The reality is that Norris is second in the WDC and could be significantly closer had those mistakes not been made. And would be slightly closer had the team not imposed its will on its leading driver in this race. And that is a strategic mistake with regard to the season.

Fantasy I know, because Piastri was desperate for the win, but as McLaren had the maximum WCC points in the bag, the best result statistically would have been for him to let Lando through to take the 25 WDC points. OK, it would have been an empty win, but wasn’t it so for OP anyway?

McLaren are guilty of sitting the fence.

Lando had pole, is second in the championship and had more than enough pace to win the race and close the gap to Max. Yes, the team twice pitted Lando first compromising Piastri, but so what? Lando is the senior driver, they should be doing all they can to back him for the championship. Piastri’s turn will come and can win races when Lando cannot. They can’t both be champion.

McLaren have lost out before in the WDC by letting their drivers take points off each other. They are doing it again. The team principal needs to grow a pair and make a decision.

Bottom line is, Norris won the race but Piastri was gifted the flag at the last minute. Everybody knew it, and Piastri's reaction from the cockpit after taking the flag was more like an apology than a celebration. His day will come, but in reality he still has not won a Grand Prix, whatever the record books show.

McLaren were sure of maximum points either way; what on earth were they thinking?

Did Piastri request -and was denied - his tyre stop before Norris had his? Or was the Norris stop before Piastri's because team Norris wanted it and Piastri and his engineers didn't see the need to pit him at that point?

What the team are saying is that they stopped Norris to defend against Hamilton, not to undercut Piastri.

"I've gone to 5 on brake bias and the car still won't effing turn in!"

"Go to mode 9 Max and press..."
"Mode 9!? Why!? What's wrong with Mode 7?"
"Max, go to Mode 9, press and hold overtake to pass him"

"So it's OK to just drive others off the circuit now is it!?"
"You weren't ahead of him at the apex Max"
"Oh yeah, whatever!"

Talk about fragile ego...

When Lewis was blatantly robbed in Abu Dhabi, he sucked it up and went to shake hands and congratulate Max. Can't possibly imagine Max doing the same. After being put under pressure and losing out, he just stands there with a face like a smacked Rse.

From comments on Sky; Max was up until 03:00 Sunday morning playing a virtual racing game and played again in the hours before the actual race. Doesn't seem like the best preparation for a Grand Prix to me.

Agreed ^^^

Lewis is a class act 👌. Remember all those times he said: ‘We win as a team & we lose as a team!’

All the success RB have given Max and the first sign a few issues and he behaves like a right t!t. 🤨

Fair enough, but I still can't tell if Piastri chose to stay out or was compelled to to permit Norris his stop. Which, kinda dictates whether giving him the win was valid or not.
