Finance company charge for changing numberplate.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what finance companies charge for administration of a change of numberplate on a car?

I bought the wife's Alfa MiTo a private plate; and she has been stung for £50 from FIAT finance to cover costs of their administration.

£50 sounds excessive. The insurance company charged nothing, and arguably did more as a result of the change (printing out new certificate etc). I'm not sure; but there may well be a £50 charge again, when she hands the car back in 2.5 years time (its a lease car).

I know £50 isn't big in the grand scheme of things; but its the principle. If these things are never challenged; they become the norm.

Any "consumer" tips ?

Tell them to piss off and redo the paperwork showing the VIN number.

That way you can do what you want with the plate.

I was told that there was a £55 charge by Mercedes finance to alter the paperwork  but the finance manager at the dealers said that he would get the charge waived when I was ready to change. They are even going to take my log book, retetention cert etc. to the local licensing office and do the queueing for me (they are in there fairly regularly with other customers plate transfers). Then make up the new plates. Mercedes Macclesfield-cant praise them enough :thumb:

Free for me on my Company Car with our leasing company. Although having said that about 12 years ago my insurance company charged £25 to amend their records when I changed number plates. I wasn't happy with it then but I didn't mind as my insurance was a freebie with the VW Vento I had at the time.

I think it's excessive - perhaps you should have mentioned the prospective plate change when you took the lease out?

Don't tell them..What will they do.. They can't take the car back..

That may not be an option depending upon what type of finance scheme it's on...

That was going to be my next question, how much do MB charge. Thanks for pre-empting :)

Tell them to piss off

The best option so far :D Bloody Italians.

I spoke to the dealer before the wife took deliver of the car as I was going to have the plates put on the car ready for pickup. However, the dealer said because of the time until delivery was only a few days, it would be easier to just put it on a later date; no mention was made of any charge, but then I would'nt have expected him to say either :(

They found out; I guess the DVLA told them. The lease is a pay £x now, balloon payment at the end, or hand the car back type of lease.

lex business partner £150 for putting the plate on the £150 to take it off at the end of the lease.............

Argue that the number plate is not a true vehicle identifier - only the VIN is.

Claim that their document is ambiguous and penalises your right to have any registration mark you care to adopt for your vehicle.

Request that they waive the charge, alter their protocol and confirm, in writing, their intention to record the VIN identifier accordingly.

Their methodology allows unfair charging.

Depending on the finance arrangement, it might not be your vehicle for you to put a personal plate onto.

Maybe the technicality of ownership of the entire item until paid but I'm sure that the 'on the road' charge which includes the number plates etc. is borne by the customer and not the finance company.

As I said, push for documentation to only show the VIN and the problem disappears, as does their revenue stream.
