Formula One 2018 - General Thread

I updated to sky Q and decided that as the previously free GP would now have to be paid for I gave it a miss.

I did not watch them all anyway, commitments and early starts in Far East meant I only watched about half of them. Just not worth the cost with sky.

Too many boring races did not help although I miss watching Lewis and MB winning

I record every session in case I miss them and watch the build up and notebooks. I don't yet have a 4K TV otherwise I would have upgraded to Sky Q. Yes i do pay for it but there is so much more coverage with Sky. It's worth it imo and it isn't the broadcaster's fault if some races are boring.

With Liberty in charge the coverage should get better. These 360 deg cameras should be good.

Have you treated yourself to any McLaren-Renault goodies yet Bob?

Not yet mate, let the prices come down a bit or I could put a Renault sticker over the Honda badge on my old ones :D

Oh did anyone notice that the Grid Girls were missing?

No, because when I actually watched a race I switched on at 12:59:30.

Treat yourself to a 4K TV and watch it in UHD it’s bloomin awesome.

I can recommend the Sony A1 OLED series.

I missed the grid girls.

Felt sorry for Hamilton who is an awesome driver.

I wish there were more tracks with better overtaking chances as I believe this is what’s missing from F1 at moment.

I’ve got a lovely 4K TV but I’m too tight to upgrade to ultra HD. :)

That's another possible solution, but the problems of visibility remain. You can't just reach for another tear-off!
Having spent most of my racing life with closed sports cars,I know how much the visibility can be a problem.
Imagine 2hrs or Ferrari oil, Pirelli rubber, bugs and general debris on that shield...that's before we get to wet conditions or optical issues....
I've had drivers come up to the factory to select their screen and a spare for Le Mans from a delivered batch a few weeks before the race!
Then on LM cars we had wipers and a 30 sec pit stop every 45mins with a with a dedicated man to clean the screen.

It's possible, but there will be a host of visibility concerns to overcome. They do not race in high altitude, clean air:rolleyes:

I did a deal with Sky last year so that I'm now getting Sky Q for less than the multi-room service I had before.
So effectively I watch in 4k for...less than free:)
UHD on a good 4K TV is, as 'headhurts' rightly says, awesome. I agree the Sony A1 is great, but my vintage (2015!) Samsung 65" does pretty good too;)

You’ve just inspired me to phone Sky. I’ll keep ya posted. :thumb:

We upgraded to skyQ last year after buying a nice new TV, my wife dealt with the whole upgrade/negotiations and made sure we kept the F1 channel.
I was gutted when I got home and found that we didn't get 4k! turns out we had just wrongly presumed that was what skyQ was all about.
never mind, it'll do for now, the wife refuses to upgrade the package so i'll just have to put up and shut up.

Some good points Mactech, I agree visibility is everything and what a difference it makes when you have a clear screen - I wonder if they can use the wind to remove a tear-off strip one a tab is broken by the driver, i.e. the wind just blows a strip off when released. Maybe a hand hole away from the line of sight that doubles up as ventilation...?? That and all the nona tech in the world to help the debris not stick in the first place...

FWIW you'll already be aware I'm sure there are race classes that have the dedicated screen cleaning man, but given the speeds of F1 waiting for a pit stop to have clear visibility is a major handicap - expect to see them run wide to gain advantage. :(:(

Well, I've just finished Adian Newey's book, as recommended on here, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Absolutely fascinating and very readable. He does confirm what many believe in that FIA does indeed stand for Ferrari International Aid, and explains the origins and development of many of his ideas and innovations and how the rule book is the most useful tool in his toolbox.

One thing that wasn't mentioned (except in passing, that it wobbled a lot as it went over kerbs) is the Red Bull front wing that seemed for all the world to sink to the ground on the straights but passed all the deflection tests. Perhaps it's still 'current'?

If you're in any way interested in cars, read it. Ten quid in hardback from Amazon, free delivery too.
