Formula One 2018 - General Thread

Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser...

Seriously? The rest of the field haven't won but most or all don't put themselves across like LH when he doesn't win. I find it a shame that he can't just take it on the chin and see the race for how it was and take the positives out of it. Hence my comment.

I agree Re: Lewis. The interviews are sooooooo awkward and cringeworthy if he doesn’t win. One word answers, smarmy grins, awkward silences etc.

I understand how competitive he (and every other driver) is but he is the current most consistent sulker.

And the above is coming from me, a Lewis fan. I want him to win every race (until McLaren bounce back :)) and this years WDC. I just wish he’d not be as moody in defeat.

The rest of the field (well most of them) have no realistic expectation of winning. For them, a podium is success. For Lewis anything less than a win is failure.

I do think his interviews are at times painfully cringeworthy, but he's not a TV personality, he's a racing driver and one of the very best there has been. If you watch his post race interview (not the immediate one with Martin Brundle), he is more conciliatory.

^ Lewis could take a leaf out of Valentino Rossi's book when losing in MotoGP. Always gracious, accpets either he or the bike weren't good enough and looks forward to the next race.
Thats why, after 20 years in the sport he is still the most popular.

I agree, Lewis could/should be less petulant when things aren't going his way. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I don't. He can pedal though.

Channel 4 at 9pm this evening.
Guy Martin v Jenson Button at Siverstone.
Both driving an F1 car......................OK Jenson has the 6 wheel Williams version but it should be fun.
Not seen it yet, I’ve recorded it, but I didn’t realise Williams did a 6-wheeler, I thought it was Tyrrell.

Williams' 6 wheeler had its double wheels at the back.

whereas the Tyrrell had the double wheels at the front.

Well, you live and learn! And it apparently raced once
According to the programme it never raced. FIA banned four-wheel drive and ground effects tunnels (well those that had sliding skirts) before it could debut.

Mmm

Wikipedia (always correct - not!) seems to suggest it "debuted" at the 1982 Belgian GP?

If the C4 programme is correct though, ie it didn’t actually race, the pedant in me would argue that it wasn’t therefore strictly a Grand Prix car, just a design exercise.

Pretty good show last night. I like both Guy and Jenson and there was a brief appearance by Coulthard. I wasn't aware the Frank Williams had a son that ran the dept they showed. Maybe he could roles with Claire?

From the documentary about Williams shown some months ago, it seems that John and Claire Williams don't get along at all well. John came across as being hugely resentful that Frank has chosen Claire to run the F1 team. The rift didn't seem likely to be healed anytime soon either. It's a shame when this happens within a family.

...and was it late last year or early this year that he was saying that Ferrari were deliberately taking him out.....he is probably the worst loser on the circuit - no excuses.

He is a great driver but having the best car makes all the difference and you seldom win without the best car - and it shows like last weekend when the Ferraris were performing better than the MB.

The pedant in me agrees...

Great programme though. I think Guy did a pretty decent job in the car with such limited on-track time.

It was this year when he accused Kimi taking him out to assist Seb.

......and let’s not forget, Seb had plenty of ‘throwing toys out of the pram moments’ in his Red Bull years.

As @GeeJayW says, when they’re regular winners they cry more if they don’t win.

Of course the car makes a huge difference. The clearest example of where driving talent makes the difference is in the wet. Senna at Donnington perhaps the clearest. Button was always pretty awesome in the wet. Of the current crop, when it rains, often as not Lewis quicker than his peers.

Nico (and Alonso) had to resort to some pretty shady stuff to get under Lewis' skin and therefore gain an advantage and a championship. Everyone bangs on about how good Alonso is. Well he wasn't better than Lewis in the same car.

Right now, Ferrari probably have the quickest car, especially in a straight line. It also seems to be a bit easier on its tyres than the Mercedes. Ferrari also have two very quick drivers. So most expected a win from Ferrari this weekend and I think they're favourites for Monza... unless it rains.

Q. F1 is not a popularity contest, so why does Lewis have to be a good loser?

Like I've said above, I don't always like the way Lewis behaves and at times he does let himself down.
