Formula One 2018 - General Thread

So is Lewis the best driver or is it just because he has the best car?

Or is it that he has got a very good car and a good team because he’s the best driver?
No need for the angry face....

My own view is that Lewis is the best driver of the current crop. Max, Daniel, Seb are very close. He is also in a very well funded and talented team that give him a car that can compete. Clearly the car (aero, tyres, engine, chassis) makes a difference as per Mactech's post, but this season Lewis has IMHO made the difference between the top two teams. He has made very few errors and has at times delivered some sublime driving.

I have to say that while I do believe that all of the top drivers are talented well beyond a level that most of us can comprehend, there are a few drivers that have something extra. Lewis is one these.

^^ I would add Alonso to that list. The amount of points he has managed to get in one of the worst cars on the grid is remarkable imo

Sorry, I didn’t know it was an angry face. I thought it was a big grinning face!!

I sort of agree with you, he does get the most out of the car he's in when he's not running into or being run into. That's clear from his recent drives with McLaren and his last season with Ferrari. However, 'crashgate' has always left me feeling a bit flat about Alonso and he seems to have a talent for ending up sat in the wrong car.

It's not just about having exceptional driving talent. Part of being a successful driver is having the vision and whatever else it takes to wangle your way into the right team at the right time.

Is it cheating to be this good 20 years ago and still improving?

I totally agree with you.

I remember when Mansell won the WC and the pub bored saying ‘you could put a monkey in that car and it would win’ nothing much changes does it?

But he was able (I think) to jump into the 1994 Williams and put it on pole ( although he made a bit of a hash of the race)

A little surprised, but given the struggles they've been having of late maybe not so unpredictable. Must feel like pushing an elephant up the stairs at times. He was Filipe's man really. Again I don't know him, but from what I've seen I never really thought that Head of Vehicle Performance was quite 'him' somehow. I could of course be totally wrong, and I'm not trying to be disrespectful in anyway whatsoever. He does come over as a properly nice guy.

Team is the sum of its parts.

How good you appear to be - or being recognised for your best work - is dependent on a bit of luck with the right group of people around you - whether you are the prima donna designer or a minion technician.

So it's hard to judge. Williams havent't had that sweet spot of it coming
together.

I agree. My view of Rob isn't just based on his time at Williams though. I'm just wondering whether a top management role in an F1 team is 'him' that's all. Not saying he's not got the ability, just considering if that's what really floats his boat.

Constructors championship.
So to keep it alive Ferrari need to score 12 more points than Mercedes here. So a Merc win would prevent that. If Mercedes score 31 points or more over the next 2 races then it's theirs even if Ferrari finish 1,2 in both.

Does that sound about right? I'd imagine both will be gunning for it so that will make the next two races interesting although from memory LH usually goes into sleep mode once he's won a WDC.

Good result for LH. Let's see how tomorrow goes ....
