Formula One 2018 - General Thread

Lewis also advised him in the cool down room that lapped cars can overtake you and hinted that you (Max) shouldn't have risked trying to keep him behind as it wasn't for position. As said, hopefully he will learn from this although he will probably still say he has no regrets. He will regret it if he is fighting for the title.

A great race, another good win for Hamilton. So has Bottas just not got what it takes to be up there with Hamilton, Vettle, Verstappen and Ricciardo or is it that the car is set up to suit Lewis's style more? Probably a bit of both.
How do we rate Red Bulls chance next season, those Hondas seem to have got a bit more reliable now, but are they really better than the Renault engine at the moment?

There is no doubting MV's speed and talent, and given a few more years experience he will undoubtably be a world champion.
At the moment, his immaturity both on and off track is doing him no favours. As already mentioned, he doesn't like being overtaken, even by a backmarker unlapping himself.
A mature driver like Lewis, Kimi or Seb would just let him go and look at the big picture.
If he isn't taking out his team mate he tangles with anyone near him and some of his overtakes border the likes of Grojean a few years ago.
He will come through it better driver, but he isn't endearing himself to the neutral fans with his attitude right now.

Saying all the above, F1 needs drivers like Max who wear their heart on their sleeve and give it their all.

If the Max/ Ocon incident is viewed independently of race position then every time I re-run the video it looks to me that Max is 100% at fault. He left Ocon no room. Max could have left room and raced Ocon instead he chose to drive into the side of him. The aftermath was just sheer arrogance on Max's part.

While we want some new real racers I personally don't want another one with the arrogance of Schumacher.

I'd be very surprised if MV ever wins a WDC.

I would be extremely surprised if he doesn't based on what we have seen so far.

He's not flawless - but he has genuine speed - and despite the tough guy aspect has some decent racecraft *when he chooses to use it*.

In the post-race show on Sky it was said that the rumours up and down the paddock are that cars will be slower next year due to the new regulations however Red Bull's car is rumoured to be as fast as this year's car. All speculation at the moment of course.

Bottas is not as quick as Lewis, Seb or Kimi IMO. Either a very different set-up or his driving style just doesn't extract as much out of the car as Lewis.

Valteri is also a bit too polite on track at times.

Will be interesting to see how the new regs affect the cars next year.

BBC to show Formula E from next month

The BBC will show coverage of every ABB FIA Formula E Championship race from December.

Races for the series will be featured live on the BBC Sport website, BBC iPlayer and BBC Red Button.

Formula E, which launched in 2014, features fully electric single-seater cars racing street circuits around the world.

The opening race of the fifth season takes place at the Ad Diriyah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia on December 15.

Couldn't agree more.

MV could turn into an excellent driver with a realistic shot at the WDC if he learned a bit of humility, as long as he doesn't kill himself or another driver with his aggressive antics beforehand.

Abu Dhabi grid penalty for Hamilton?
Mercedes have admitted Lewis Hamilton faces a possible grid penalty in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking in the team's 'Pure Pitwall' debrief, chief strategist James Vowles said: "After the first pit-stop with Lewis we noticed quite a significant problem. It required a huge amount of input from within the team to get the car towards the end of the race.'

"The net result of that is the engine has sustained some level of damage, but we do not understand what, and it has to be inspected and understood before we can make any decision going forward to Abu Dhabi."

But even if the engine is deemed unfit for service, one option still available to Mercedes would be re-introducing an engine that Hamilton has previously used without any sort of penalty.

Fake news - they have other power units available to them

Testament to modern F3 car construction she survived. Appears from her speed she had not braked [system failure??] prior to hitting 2 vehicles before the corner

Probably a worthwhile watch on BBC2 tomorrow at 9pm.
The story of Billy Monger, the youngster who lost both legs in a terrible F4 crash at Donington Park last year and his successful return to racing.

F3 driver Florsch suffers spinal fracture in Macau Grand Prix shunt
Evidently there were yellow caution lights flashing on the straight [ possible not switched off on the restart] which caused the driver in front of her to brake prematurely. She hit his rear at full speed estimated at 170mph and took off.
