Formula One 2018 - General Thread

I totally enjoyed it.

Something to do with the VSC and Hamilton losing?
It's a bit much that a poor pit stop by Haas costs the quickest driver the race win. Also another clear illustration of how totally dependant on aerodynamics these cars are.

It’s also shows that it’s not just about how quick the driver is.
Track position is pretty much everything in Melbourne. Not much overtaking done. Without the VSC, Lewis would most probably have run away with it.

Toto Woolf has said they lost the race due to a ‘software bug’.
Are computers doing the racing now?

Having covered Kimi by pitting within a lap they then needed the right gap to Seb to cover off a pit stop under safety car conditions. They got that wrong. Still needed the VSC for Seb to get a win by going long in the first stint. Without the VSC he would have been in for third or second if they swapped with Kimi. After ten laps Seb wasn't going to win in a straight race.

Never mind. Still good to see three teams much closer together than previous seasons.

McLarens switch to Renault power units seems to have been wise with TR Honda powered cars 1 last place & 1 DNF.

I think it was just the interaction of a number of safety regs which caught out Lewis today. You can hardly blame the rule makers for wanting the racing to be safe, but until we see all possible scenarios played out you can never be completely sure that it will not have an adverse effect on the racing.
VSC works very well and was fine for the first Hass driver who found somewhere safe to park. The second driver was much more mindful of the new(ish) reg that you cannot drive an unsafe car around the circuit without penalty, so stopped and and caused a real Safety car.
Ferrari had gambled on going long on Seb's first stint and just got lucky in a very small window where Lewis was vulnerable.
The more regulations there are the more possibility of interaction....

The purpose of the VSC was to cause less disruption and neutralise the race. The fact that it was then changed to a full SC means that Race Control got it wrong and should have known the car was unrecoverable from it's position without a full SC.

What is to stop drivers going through the pits during every VSC period and gaining an advantage as the pits are not classified as part of the track and the delta times do not count there?

A dull race decided by the Hass team. Last weekends Motogp was an order of magnitude better spectacle.

I respect your opinion. However, comparisons to Moto GP are becoming very tiresome. If it was dull then don’t watch it. Simples. :D

IIRC Bob cars are only allowed through the pits to be ‘serviced’ by their team.
Happy to be corrected if this isn’t the case.

I just think F1 is a bunch of very intelligent people but collectively it can be a bit stupid at times.

Rules are hard to define. But it has been a longstanding problem that the SC introduces a pit advantage. Attempts to mitigate it have not been satisfactory.

My view is that there should be a minimum pit time when there is a VSC or SC. These days the VSC can be activated prior to the SC so that actually makes the application of this a bit simpler. If you pit under the VSC you stay stationary for a time specified at the start of the race based on a reasonable estimate of the time the stop should take without an advantage or disadvantage. This could be handled using a no touch rule as is imposed with pit stops where penalties are being applied. Where a double stop with both cars in a team occurs then the time for the second car would have any overlap waiting for the first car subtracted.

Arguably stops under the SC should incur a time offset to be added to the car's time. Not so much a penalty as an adjustment.

I have to say that prior to the first race I wasn't too bothered by he the HALO having come to terms with it ...... but having watched a race I think it ..... sucks big time. On car camera positioning could have mitigated this a bit. It's bizarre that this wasn't dealt with prior to the season start.

And yet again this race we saw cars unable to pass because of a mix of aerodynamics and track layout. Those compilcated front wings don't just suck - they suck the life out of the sport as well. And the last big changes to the regs made them worse - not better.

But surely all the variables above add to the spectacle of the show. A little unpredictablity is great for opportunistic results.

I also disagree regarding the halo’s. After just this one race we’re already used to it. It’s evolution.
The phrase ‘mountain out of a molehill’ springs to mind.
