Four advisory Items today on my Merc MOT plus really poor service !!!

However now I am slating them off to everyone I know including on a public forum.....fair enough, I havn't named the garage, but if I did, it would do them no favors.

I doubt it would do anything other than land you in hot water.

They offered a deal, you took it but failed to adhere to the T&C so they said "No deal", so reamed an extra £20 out of you.

I suspect if we all took a look at any successful business we can think of that operates in a competitive market, they all use similar tactics to gain customers.

Sorry, what was their discount again...was it 25% or was it 30%?

DM you seemed to have changed your tune from the ECP thread  (thanks for the hint by the way)

They know their business. If they circulate 10,000 vouchers in the local rag and it draws in 200 customers, they probably make £20k out of the tests and repairs.

The ethics aren't good, but the marketing is great and it works, therefore is a good business model.
They can afford to lose one customer that doesn't accept the "system", but the reality is that vigilants returned for another go, so...

A business needs bums on seats to make money.

People arent stupid and that game only works for so long, eventually word gets round and hey presto you have no customers to con.

After I questioned the advisorys, I went to pay them. I pulled out the voucher and handed it over. The voucher was for a £25 MOT

His next words were "Right....I've had enough of this, you are paying £54. You are paying the full amount now" He was quite aggressive in his manner.

To which I replied " I beg your pardon ? What do you mean by you've had enough of this ? Whats the problem with this voucher ?"

Then he continued to be rude to me and I argued back and stormed out of the place. When I left the place I was also kicking off as I wasn't going to let him to talk to me like that and get away with it.

I'm quite sure if you were treated in that manner you wouldn't be happy and I'm sorry but you cannot convince me that this was all fair and square.

I bet they have retired long before that, new stupid punters are born every day.

vigilants went back as a result of obtaining the voucher.

People will always shop when they believe they are getting something off.

As an example, I suspect forum members would use a parts supplier that was offering a discount, which on inspection wasn't really a discount at all.

I would have given him £55 and told him to keep the change to buy a chill pill.

I'm not trying to convince you, I've already said it's not ethical, but as a marketing exercise it works.

Why didn't you just refuse to pay the £54? Maybe they beat the cash out of you?

He has been stung twice and wont use again, will be the same for everyone... If I was spoken to like that, there is not a chance I would EVER take my money there ever again!

A discount which isnt a discount? You do make me laugh mate.

I don't recall saying that ECP gave poor service, did I?
I was thinking more along the line of your changing view on companies that offer discounts that are not discounts or something along those lines. I see now it is good business strategy.

To be fair, I was thinking this... Refuse to pay... Call police if you have to?

While ever there are greedy people out there that think they are getting a 'good' deal, they will always come back for more.

At £25, the garage is almost doing it for nothing, I can't remember how much it is they have to pay VOSA per test.

You obviously can't remember where I said it was a good business model for a parts supplier to entice and engage forum members with their telesales pitch.

A good business model, poor form to offer a discount that isn't really one.

I guess you won't be shopping at any particular parts supplier then due to their practices of having multiple prices and not honouring discounts they offer?

Only about £3, but the testers labour is most of the rest.

new stupid punters are born every day.

Last year, KwickFit were offering 50% MOTs and for the last year Halfords are also doing the same thing.

I think its a bit unfair to label people as "stupid" for going for a discounted product.

I don't think I would have had such a rude service from either one of those companies.

I MOT five cars every year. If I can get the job done at a reasonable discount, I save quite a lot of money.

Need a spade DM you can keep on digging

It is not as simple as that. Most people (though not all) enjoy their work and take pride in it. When I used to work on my own, I was of course happy when earning money, but I also had deep satisfaction from getting a job done properly and being thanked by a happy client. Wanting to provide good service is not mutually exclusive to wanting to earn a living. Of course there are the Basil Fawltys of this world, but people with attitude should simply not be put in customer-facing positions.
