Friends car stolen but how?

BMW spokesman Gavin Ward said today: “Vehicle theft is something all manufacturers have to contend with and the current BMW range meets or exceeds all current legislative criteria.”

Their attitude says it all really. I do hope Mercedes are not affected like this.

Note the way they are all (near) identically dressed!

Looks like they had to push it away - I wonder why?

I suspect what they did there was to short out the indicators (in the mirror housing) so that as soon as the alarm was triggered it blew the fuse. If the alarm is on the same circuit it would also be silenced.

They then push the car out the way so they can connect to the OBD port and add a key with less risk of being spotted.

Makes me think that French law has the right idea about face covering.

Except that it's pointless in this sort of circumstance.

Anybody in the process of carrying out a crime isn't exactly going to worry about breaking some law regarding face covering.

The French law is for a completely different purpose.

Gravel driveway from the footage, that ought to wake up the owners.

Surely a basic steering wheel lock would stop most of this?

The organisation and speed they take that 1 series is horrendous.

The whole BMW saga is becoming a joke.....

I disagree. Ban hoodies or any other face covering and make the wearing of going equipped to steal.

Sure they could carry a balaclava in their pocket but once again... going equipped..

So much for anoraks then ...

In winter?

I think a reality check is in order here!

as one of the members in here already posted best solution seems to be either a hidden kill switch or something to cover the OBD port.

A bit of gravel crunch wouldn't wake me.

Haven't steering locks been shown to be a futile, easily overcome obstacle?

Funny that, in the old days (70s - 80s) I always fitted an imobiliser switch (ignition cut out really) to my cars. Switch was hidden under the dash. Never had a car stolen despite some desirable ones and living in London at the time.

Seems the old ways are the best! :D

I read over on Pistonheads that they can break these by using a can of compressed air (freezes the lock) and then hitting the lock to shatter the metal.

I would think all security devices are beatable, it's just about slowing thieves down so they'll not bother or go elsewhere.
