i'll be coming from centre of edinburgh at 5:30.... google says 1 hour 10 mins, so 7pm should be ok for me, if i'm lucky with the traffic.

Derek, 1hr 10 mins in Rush hour is a tall order IMHO. I'd agree with Steven and say 730 to allow for time to park up, nosey down, and give you time to drive through without taking daft risks just to make it on time. Gives you plenty of time to get through safely.

Why don't you take the Ferry to Aberdeen, drive down, spend the night and go up the next day.
