Help: Rear Brake Discs and Pads (W220) S500l Only 37000miles

Hi all,

I had the car back from MB after a service A, I was told the rear brakes and pads would need replacing (which were not in stock at the time). The car is now showing the warning symbol for 'Brake lining visit workshop'. I am suprised that at only 32k the rear brake discs need replacing :o(

When questionning the dealer wether the discs actually need replacing he told me that there is a small lip on them and that they need changing.

I am now confused as to wether

1) Just pay the dealer to replace the rear discs AND pads (as the car is 3 years+ discount of 20% on labour and 10% parts) but still leaves me £380 out of pocket.

2) Take it to the indie, not sure how much labour he will charge but mb parts prices will without the mb discount. But can really tell me if the discs need replacing?

3) Take it to the indie and use better parts then MB and maybe cheaper? Advice needed

All advice much appreciated. Please can you help?

Thanks
Jig

Get it checked out by an indie, before i had Service + on the Sclass i allways had it checked by my indie before i took it for service.

They could well need changing. The S500 is a heavy old barge and has enough power to require fair use of the brakes.

Just as an aside, do you ever left foot brake?

Hi All, thanks for the reponse so far..

No I dont left foot brake, and I agree it is a barge but I still expected the rear discs to last longer.

The sign has come up, how much longer can I use the car with the sign on? (concerned that dont want to take any risks)

Thanks
Jig

Left foot braking on some of these cars does not work in the normal sense as like on mine the throttle cuts if the brake pedal is pushed or touched, measuring the disc will tell all

It does on mine too, but if you apply a bit more pressure it will apply power until kickdown is reached, then play is off..

So Smokey and the Bandit is available for 75% of accellerator mvement. Only found this out a couple of weeks ago..;)

Thanks, I will give it a go, the day I first bought the car I sat at some lights and waited till green, Alas nothing happened and I was the last away.

ASR ? Id say thats humped the discs on a 5.0l

Anti Skid Restraint. Also includes traction control.

As Fuzzer says it will eat the rear disks and pads if you pull away smartly.

My opinion, highly unlikely that the discs will need changing after this mileage.

Get an independent mechanic to have a quick visual check and I am sure that he will agree that pad and sensor replacement will be all that is required.

get it checked out and use an indie to do the work... why pay stealer prices for stuff like this?!
i wouldnt leave it too long as if the pads do get too low then you will deffo need new discs!!

Thanks all, got the pads changed by the indie(£60 labour) and pads from mercs. Discs have got some life left in them!

I think this forum is great:)

Thanks
Jig:)

we told you ! and that's a good price for labour.

That's what Tony Purslow charges if your car is over six years old.
