How many V8 engined cars have you owned and what's your favourite

3 V8's.

E39 M5 (2013 to 2015).
E39 M5 (2015 to 2017).
W211 E55 AMG (2017 to 2018).

The E55 was the quickest, less dynamic than the E39's though. I would have loved the power of the E55 in my E39's.

Hard to choose a favourite, but if I had to choose then it would be the 1st E39, purely because it was my first V8.

I could be wrong but was you the guy that sold your E55. Did you then purchase the E60 M5, If so how did you get on with it?

I am indeed that guy.

I enjoy the M5, but my enjoyment of it has been tainted by the engine failing. The story is;

Had rod bearings replaced, did 1800 miles, engine started rattling. Sent car for warranty check, garage who did the work took hammer to oil pump etc. Difficult to prove, so had the bits of engine collected, found out that the only things salvageable were the sump and block, had engine rebuilt with new crank etc, found that gearbox was damaged, which turned out not to be my gearbox, but had been swapped for a broken one by the aforementioned garage, so had to buy another gearbox. Also found that a full tank of fuel had been stolen from my car as well as fuel pumps, so had to replace those. Overall a very expensive outcome, and one that is difficult to prove, and would be costly to take to court.

Just the one, Jensen Interceptor which I had for 33 years.

Certainly got to see a lot of the internals of THAT engine.. I'm gonna be charitable and say the PO probably abused it, but just about everything that moved had to be replaced.

It had a really nice balance between top-end power and mid-range torque, but of course, it didn't have anything like enough of either! Well, not for a 7.2 Litre anyway.

Had plenty of V6s before and since, but nothing beats the sound of a V8 flat-out.....though a V6 comes close.

Wonder what sounds we'll all be talking about when we're forced to go electric?

That being said, my electric skateboard does have an interesting whine....

I've never owned a V8, but have driven a few:
Forward-Control Landrover was I think the first. Thought it was awesome at the time.
TR7 V8 conversion
Porsche 928
Audi A8 Diesel
Mustang 5.0 GT
I think that's it so far.

Favourite to date has been the Mustang (it really turned heads on start-up), which I liken to a Labrador puppy; filled with enthusiasm and tail-wagging activity, but almost no control over any of it. In the wet, it had the potential to be a real ditch-finder, but it was a proper hoot to drive.

Have also driven a few V12's
Jaguar XJS
Ferrari 575M Maranello
Aston Martin Rapide

The 575M was a seriously quick car, had that around the Ty Croes on Anglesey and at Millbrook Proving Ground. Bit of a sleeper, no-one would think it had the performance and grip that it actually had.
The Aston was at Millbrook too, but only for a couple of laps of the hill route, so whilst a nice experience it was a bit too brief to really find out much about how it could go.

Sad state of affairs :(. Sorry to hear this. I bet that V10 did sound amazing all the same.

It still does. I had the engine rebuilt. I could have bought another M5 mind. I'll be selling it in the new year for some V8 TT goodness.

You don't hold on to them long :D

I get bored. I'll have had the M5 since may 2018. It'll be probably take until may next year to sell!

Crikey..... I've had a few! My favourite engine the V8 and currently have 4 of them [emoji3]

I'll have a recount at some but must be at least 10 possibly more like 15.

What a terrible story! Are you prepared to name and shame them so others can avoid them? Never heard of a garage swapping parts for broken ones before but I guess it’s entirely possible.

The company was ran by a person called Brian McAllister. I believe he is currently still active, after being inactive for so long.

This is the damage inflicted on the oil pump. You'd expect that can of damage to have marked the sump / stopped the engine from running, but it did neither, as the damage was caused by his trusty hammer.

And the best of the bunch?

Crikey that is a tough one as they all do different jobs. If I had to say which I though was the best it would have to be the Vantage. Although the XJL is very good and a close second. The E55K wouldn't be too far behind either.

MB 560 SEL (Germany )
Chevrolet Camaro 5.7 (Germany )
JAG SF 5.0lt
E500 ...Probably others that i have forgotten.

Been many years since I owned a V8 engined car! But, back in the late 80s I had a '79 Trans Am, lovely noise but not as powerful as you might think! Then an XJ8 followed and finally, the biggest mistake I've made in my car history, a Maserati Khamsin in the early 90s. Great car in a lot of ways, but the Citroen hydraulics were a nightmare! However, the mistake was not buying it, it only cost me £10K back then, plus about £6K in repairs, the mistake was selling it!! I let it go for £20K 2 years later (I at least didn't lose on it!) but, one recently sold for £150K!!!!!! Gutted? Yup! LOL!

I test drove a E39 6 speed manual 540i saloon years ago from Hexegan in Highgate. I was so close to buying that car. A lovely example is the 540i E39. I went with the 530iA instead. That was a fantastic car also.
The 530 is meant to be a nicer steer with the rack and pinion steering instead the recirculating ball in the V8. A manual 540i is a rare motor!
