HOWTO: Retrofit facelift wheel/cluster to pre-facelift W210/W208

Fantastic!! you are real genius. Which MB did you go to for STAR programming? Cos most MB will refuse.

Programme New IC

IMPORTANT WARNING

Do not drive more than 200Km before getting the new cluster Programmed to the car, as this will lock the new cluster without Any mileage showing and MB will not be able to set the mileage.

It took me 30 mins. to persuade MB to undertake this work as they said it is impossible And can’t be done, I had to provide a written waiver before they would do this work. I hope you have better luck than me.

MB will need to programme the following:-
-Activate navigation menu
-Set tank capacity – mine was 80 L (tank with ski hole = 60L)
-Change Can ID – This is important
-Set Engine capacity
-Set to Manual transmiossion
-Set for automatic climate control – if your has it
-Set country code as last cluster

Faults

It is possible that you may get an ABS and/or ESP fault after completion, in order to reset this you will need to turn the steering wheel fully left then fully right twice. This will reset these two errors.

If you have an SRS fault this is because you have turned on the ignition with the airbag disconnected, MB can reset this for you when they do the programming.

THE END!

Very good. Any pics you have done?

Oui! Ok so got a lot done on the car this weekend. The new cluster works and is awaiting a trip to the star machine, the steering wheel buttons work great between the cluster and the comand. The comand turns on with car and dims with dimmer switch. The cluster is showing a few faults...hopefully they get sorted out with the re-program. The steering wheel is now making a squeaking sound and the horn no longer works....any advice? Will post pics once everything is done.

The horn now works and had to be wired through the cluster...and the squeeking wheel was addressed. The cluster has been sent off for pixel repairs....some lying bum who sold me the cluster said it worked perfectly...the cluster needs to be reprogramed at the Star Machine....its out of a CLK55 so it has a different engine than my 4.3 litre. Its the last thing on the list

I am also slowly gathering the parts. Trying to find an amg wheel and airbag

I highly recomend buying a w208 cluster....or your fuel gauge will be inverted! I got my AMG airbag off ebay about 6 months ago for 300 bucks...came with a nice steering wheel

I thought the w208 cluster had fuel gauge issues? What happens to the fuel gauge? It's a nightmare finding amg cluster and steering wheel

Biggest problem with the 208 cluster in the 202 is that the cowling around the 208 is a lot bigger so the cluster protrudes from the opening by about an inch at the top. You'd need to cut the front off it and swap with one from a 210 or 202.

I'd offer up my own cluster as a donor but it cracked while being removed! :(

As stated 210 cluster will show inverted fuel level. I have pics of both installed in my car as a comparison (back in 2002), probably on this forum somewhere!

Do You have the complete cluster or just the screen? I have spare w202 cluster screen what i could swap

I took the whole cluster out, it's a facelift sport with white dials. I tried to push it out of the dash from behind but it was really tough so we used the OEM IC pulling tools and the edge of the cluster on one side chipped off! Highly annoying!

Are you selling it? Is it a non amg? Is there any difference between amg and non amg IC apart from the amg sign?

I have a facelift 202 sport instrument cluster for sale (1999, 205k on the clock) and a 208 CLK55 AMG cluster which I might sell (in box, new in 2003, zero miles).

Im having great diffuculty getting someone to code the cluster for me...turn off teleaid and make the engine size match and all that...no one wants to do it....whats the trick?

amg3.6, as said before you defo need a w208 cluster.

The AMG cluster is identical to all the other clusters internally, it just looks different (grey dials, AMG logos). It can be coded to fit any model in the CLK range so it probably helps if your engine features in the 208 line-up, probably not too bad if it doesn't. If you have diesel it might present some issues.

I have an extra set of OEM AMG dials if need be...would be willing to sell

Ok...so the cluster has been reset with the correct mileage...and is now in the car and at the workshop getting reprogrammed so the settings can match the car. They said theyve never heard of anyone wanting to do this.

My problem...the w208 cluster doesnt seem to fit right into my w202. Any advice?

You could either cut the excess off or you could use w202 cluster housing.

Did u get my PM?

What exactly is a CAN ID? The thread says this is important and needs to be reprogrammed to new cluster. Is this the vechicle VIN number?

Done (sort of)

I got it programmed! But things to know before hand, if trying to do this mod in any car other than the w208/w210--you have to tell them what type of cluster it came out of AND that they have to access the cluster using that model (he kept trying to go through using w202, wouldnt work). The canbus ID is the Canbus number the system uses, kind of like IP address, it sensed my ID as can310 or something, and the newer ones are CAN312.

I have no malfunctions (had tele-aid disabled, nav turned on, telephone turned on) and everything works great except....now my fuel guage is inverted...which it didnt use to be (used a CLK55 Cluster)....any suggestions?

Out of gas....

Ok so I took the C43 on a roadtrip from Maryland to Texas....and 3 hours ago I ended up on the side of the road because I ran out of gas...I told my buddy that the fuel guage is on the spritz and that we needed to refill every 300 miles...well when he pumped gas he didnt put a whole tank in and we didnt make it the anticipated 300 miles...

So my question is why is the gas needle sitting on zero and giving crazy readings, it didnt do this before the visit to the star machine...it shows empty at all times and the light stays on...its a w208 cluser in a w202....any ideas? lil help? THANKS!
