Latest firmware Upgrade for 211 COMAND

John, yes the command is factory fitted. I cannot confirm about the service upgrades. Do you know how I can check, are these necessary?

Hi Richard,
In my personal opinion ALL service upgrades are worth having and will be installed free of charge when the car pays a visit to the main dealer.

How can you check?
Good question and the easiest answer is your local dealer should tell you. It has been suggested that this information is not held on a main database and I have no definitive answer apart from that when I have contacted the Mobilo breakdown service, they have told me what work has been carried out on our vehicle, so try the dealer.

The most common service upgrade that is easily detectable for early 211's with COMAND is the Mp3 upgrade, but if your car is newer than late summer 2004, it will have this as a standard fitting.

You can also enter the Engineers Menu to see what version of COMAND you have, but I'm totally against dabbling with things I don't understand :o :o so no comment on how to access it, plus the very latest service upgrades have blocked this from happening.

If as you say your system is factory installed and works with a previous version, then my first port of call would be the DVD?

It has been rumoured that when going from version 4 up to a TMC activating version, the vehicle must have the latest service upgrades. I will once again say that was not our experience. We simply put in the new disc and Bob's Your Aunty??

I'm looking forward to other, better qualified members offering their advice and Alfie among others is someone well worth listening to.

Good luck
John

Can anyone help please?

Just received from Mercedes-benz, version 6.0 DVD part # A211 827 95 59, for W211 command aps unit. Original disk, working perfectly in the car is Version 2004/ 3.0 part # A 211 827 52 59.

When I put the new disk in the navigation unit in the boot, following the instructions it does not recognise the DVD and puts a message on the screen "insert navigation DVD in boot".

Any suggestion to get me going gratefully received.

I have all the latest updates on my W211 (early 2004) Comand, and version 6.0 DVD. As of today, I cannot "downgrade" my DVD from v6.0 to v4.1. It wont read the disk. I can therefore assume that I also cannot downgrade to version 3.0, which is the version you state you have.

So, I would concur with Glojo, and say that this looks distinctly like you do not have the required firmware updates to your Comand.

Dear John and SargeBenz thank you for your replies, I have booked a visit to MB Tonbridge for the upgrades and will keep you posted for the benefit of others.

Kind regards

COMAND upgrade problem

Hi All,

I've got a V.6 upgrade DVD which won't load and my local MB dealer insists there are no firmware upgrades necessary for my 2004 W211 with V.3 working. Any ideas anybody? TIA

Still in warranty? If so get them to sort it.
Did you buy the disc from the dealer? If so, get them to sort it : Can you try a different disc? (v6 still)

Sounds to me either 1) DVD reader in the boot in kaputt or 2) v6 disc is bad

good luck..
Steve

Just above your post you'll see this one :) I also agree with Splang ;)

The wrong side of the road audio gateway update is available as a service update (there is a service recall about this) You need the April '05 AGW update.

Your dealer should fix this for free.

Masqueraid - can you be more specific? Do you have number or specific way a dealer can identify this update?

I went to my dealer today and asked about this "fix" and they absolutly had no idea what I was on about. All I got was the usual "fob off" - "all updates carried out - thats how its is"

Sorry,don't know the version :(

The AGW firmware can only be checked/updated using Star though so presumably if they connect to your car they will be able to see what's installed & if anything has been missed.

The problem only came to light with the TMC enabled disks & it seems to be something to do with LHD vs. RHD. Hopefully the following link will help you find previous posts on the subject. Universally the issue has been corrected by a dealer firmware fix for the audio gateway.

confused completly

Are we now saying that you must have the firmware update done seperatly
before inserting v6 if you want the the destination showing on screen?

Yes. The firmware update is not linked to the version of the navigation disk (as long as the head unit currently reads at least version 4.1). If you upgrade the firmware you should get the destination visible without shelling out the £290 being asked for the V6 navigation disk.

In fact having the latest V6 disc will NOT give you this option if it is not already installed. :) Newer cars have it as standard, our vehicle is a 2004 it had V6 installed but it was not until the upgrade was carried out that we saw the new options. :)

They are completely seperate issues. If you are unfortunate and have to pay for the ETA upgrade then it should cost no more than £10. I would suggest though that those of us with older 211's a more important upgrade is the software which should be a minimum of 5 or 5.1. By upgrading from older software we will get the TMC availability.

Bikenuts I think I am in the same position as you, please see my earlier post. My DVD player and navigationtion works perfectly with the old disk and the suggestions are that a Firmwear / softwear upgrade to the Command will make the version 6.0 DVD work. I am at the dealer on Thursday for this so will make a post after that. Regards Richard

sorry Navigation!

My '55 S211 is in next monday for this upgrade. Dealer claimed no knowledge of 'firmware' - I had to explain ! - and then had to order in a new disc from MB. No mention of money (yet !)

Regarding this latest firmware upgrade it should be noted that you can no longer input navigational information whilst the vehicle is in motion. (Don't know if I've already mentioned it :o :o )

John,

I had this recently, but I thought it was because I was switching between 5.x and 6.0 disks. A quick trip to the dealership and all was sorted on STAR.

John,

I will be interested to hear how you get on with your dealership on this one. I will need to take mine in as well as the loss of this functionality is really annoying.

The laugh is you can still send text messages as you are driving, which is far more dangerous than just adding a post code
