Since the road widening there have been warnings, but no camera's.

According to this Pistonhead thread, they have now been spotted, and can be used from 18th April.

Be careful out there....

M1 around Nottingham....

They apparently only work with the variable speed limits and are disabled when these are off. Not sure I will risk that...

In an average speed limit zone say 50mph as is typical, can you enter the zone, and park up for 10 mins, and then drive at 150mph for 5 mins, average speed is still 50mph, is that OK?

You would cover the same distance 12.5 miles in the same 15 min time, in each case.

Ie. can a stretch of road have 2 speed limits in force? or does the average 50mph overide the 70mph one.

If the speed limit of the zone is 50 mph then as soon as you exceed it you are open to prosecution, for example by an unmarked police car behind you.

I was referring to an average speed zone, not a 50mph speed zone. Is there a speed limit in an average speed zone?

There's no such thing as an average speed zone, just cameras that calculate your average speed within a defined speed limit area.

They're not in use yet, there are or were signs up saying cameras not in use on the gantries which have had cameras fitted but that was a couple of days ago, they could well have been switched on, only there between J25 & J28 North and Southbound and think they're on every other gantry, might even be more than that but they're definitely not on every one.

My road angel picks them up as variable speed limit fixed cameras (so you could really rack some points up on that strip of the M1!!) - my understanding is that they're only on when the signs are illuminated, otherwise they're switched off. They did run out of funding part way through the carriageway widening process but somehow managed to secure extra funding so decided to drop the cameras in too.

I drive from near London to Glasgow every two weeks, so go through the M1 average check and on the M6. It amazes me the amount of people that are doing 65 ish through the 50, are the cameras really set that high or are they raking it in from people that just slow down as they pass each camera.

Is that not the same thing?

So what is the speed limit in the area controlled by 50 mph average speed cameras?

50mph. The only difference is the enforcement - rather than using fixed cameras that can take a snapshot of your speed they use cameras that measure your average speed over a distance - prevents the technique of slowing for the camera and speeding up again afterwards.

If they are fitted they are not working we came back from Heathrow Friday night doing some low level flying and never got flashed, also going South there were definitely no cameras installed on the gantry's so looks as though they might be now getting around to doing the install.

As you will have seen in previous posts I have a pal that programs these and does the software and the fact that people say they don't operate if the variable speed limit is not been shown is an urban myth, The ones he has done are set according to local guidelines but he mentioned one set which I think was on the M4 set at 81mph and another set at 85mph

Will give him a call and post back ;)

It was my understanding that these cameras do not use any average speed calculations but simply take a picture based on the speed indicated on variable limit sign in the same way as a Gatso does on a normal road.

This would in theory allow you to speed up between gantry signs then jump on the brakes again.

If my memory serves me correctly the road is marked after the gantry with the little White lines used for the Gatso time/distance calculation on both M1 & M6. If Specs cameras are in use then these markings are not required.

Feel free to correct if I'm mistaken.

I think that's right - variable speed limit areas are controlled by a series of spot speed cameras, not by average speed cameras, so in theory you can speed up between gantries. I guess the deterrent is that you don't know which gantry has a camera, unless you are a frequent user of the road or a Mercedes driver (in which case you will naturally be well above average as a driver and will be able to spot the cameras in advance:))

So when in use the cameras are actually on all the time then?

There are a few - maybe 3 sets of cameras on M1 South, not as many as Northbound, saw them on Wednesday night

Why not just cruise at 70mph? Often they are sited at congested spots, so you make no real time saving. It makes for a more relaxed waft.

Save the speeding and fast driving for roads that really deserve it, like this

If the area is an average speed area, with camera's measuring anyone doing more than a 50 mph average speed, then the implication must surely be that the speed limit is higher than 50MPH?

If you look carefully at the gantries, you can see the little grey boxes with small windows mounted on the bracketry at the gantries currently marked with "Camera not in use" signs. The mounting brackets on other gantries appear to be unoccupied at present.

Already we are starting to see the panic braking as cars pass under them, as imbeciles who cannot drive sensibly (or observantly, or courteously) take imaginary evasive action. :wallbash:

Undoubtedly they will become the same ones who will keep the funding coffers full with fines, thus providing handsomely for the propagation of the scheme to a wider audience.

They must be really new as there were no camera not in use signs when I went down beginning of last week, better keep my eyes peeled over the next few weeks, or might swap to the A1 instead not much difference now htere are no roundabouts

The cameras where up on the northbound section two weekends ago when I drove up.
