M113K performance air filters

Will you be at Mike's Saturday ?

yes Bruno, I will be there early mate, bit of a trip for me, but as you know Mikes work is worth it, and he's such a great guy, its nearly fun to spend my money there, he is so helpful and informative.
Hopefully going to catch up with Colin also whilst there, for a natter, if he's not too busy with work, and sound him out for info, regards the trip to Spa in the spring time, he has been there several times, and it's something a good few guys here are up for, think this trip will be on, just need to collect all the info, to put the group together:thumb:

Exactly what Ive found Jules , hence I just change my filters on a regular basis ;)

Foam - Pipercross disintegrate so ITG would be the choice for foam. Flat surface with smaller surface contact area than cotton or paper filters. Foam Flows more air over the same surface area per second than cotton or paper (pp rating and all that lol)

Cotton - K&N / Green Cotton / BMC - all similar and all pleated for greater surface area. This is done to provide similar flow rate of air mass than foam filters.

Paper - OEM (plus Mann, Hengst etc etc) - similar design to cotton, more pleats to increase surface area to offset lowest flow rate of air. Offers the greatest protection with regard to particles passing through the filter.

When all are brand new then foam probably just outflows cotton closely followed by paper. However, foam has to be oiled as do some of the cotton filters which quickly results in them starting to clog up from the dust pulled into the Airbox (a paper filter will very slowly absorb finite particles but most debris settles into the Airbox, whereas with foam / cotton it clings to the filter). Therefore the foam and cotton filters need to be removed and cleaned to retain optimal performance. With this in mind and given that I've ran cheap paper filters in both AMG's and both recording the highest bhp / torque figures for their mods, then paper wins!! I just used to remove every 3 months and shake clean, then replace after 6 months.

I tried some Pipercross and they appeared to make no difference to performance (which is good), but were a terrible fit, causing the outer rubber casing to split and causing the actual foam filter to flex and vibrate under load, this fractures the foam causing the foam the break up - not good! After 3 months I would estimate the foam filters (possibly cotton also) are 10-20% less efficient at flowing air.

Given they may only be 5% better at flowing than paper when both new, then for me this advantage is gone after a month or so...

Just my two pence worth.....

Jules

Agreed. Stick with the OEM.

Seen as we are all talking filters , anyone have any data regarding the intake setups that do away with the stock air filter setup.... worth it or just a gimmick ?

Sounds like a lot of hot air ...:p

Where's some pictures of that fine mota Peter ?

The mota is being detailed at Ed's Divine Detailing on Saturday for a week. So after that I will get some kind person to put some photo's on the Forum :D

I bought a pair of high flow foam filters from a local manufacturer at £100+VAT each. Those are catalogue, off the shelf sizes made in the UK. A custom single filter I was involved in with design previously cost the owner £250+VAT. So the price is not out of ordinary for the parts made in limited quantities. You also get an exceptional service from MSL and keep guys in business.

Thanks for all your inputs here regards my original post, but would seem to me that a few here who to my knowledge have never performance tested their cars at track or Vmax are missing the point, yes driving on the road, yes OEM filters are fine, will last all day, poodling about, however take your car to the track, you are looking for every inch that performance can be made, however small, irrespective of the negative comments, I know my own car performs far better with the piper cross filters over OEM, albeit I have the issues previously stated with them, which I duly pay for, which is what going on track regularly is, lots of money expended, but lots of thrills and enjoyment duly experienced, and will continue to do so. My new filters arrived today, I will post up how they are, once I get a run into them, for those of you that may be interested

which ones did you get in the end Ricky?

Alps mate, long time no see my friend, have ordered in a new set of the Piper cross, but I would not recommend them to you guys, because of the issues I have had and spoken of, and a set of ITG, not used them before, so very much an experiment, will have the ITG fitted Saturday at Mikes at MB Rochester, and run with them, failing this, if they are not good, I will refit the Piper Cross, for events, but in the world of cost for every day running, they seem to be very much a failure, but my car is very much track focussed, so i will live with it, and chop and change as events go.

Hopefully see you at GW sometime next year..? There's trip coming up at Spa for hopefully next spring, a long weekend trip, and a day at track, a few guys here are up for it, would it be something for you..?:thumb:

Ricky have you considered a CAI kit from across the pond?

Not experienced one on mine but the tanks seem to rave about them.

Not really mate, the thought of further major expense experimenting with my ageing car, fills me with horror to how i will explain it to my wife! I already get away with murder, doing the events I get to do. The only thing I may do shortly, if I get excited to do it, is fit an 82mm TB, but bar this only suspension mods, thats it for my car, it s not going to go much faster in a straight line, but might go through corners a little quicker, just waiting for the airmatic to fail, then might have to conceal some expenditure from the wife. Unfortunately Alex is out the talking to me on occasions, he is a very bad influence!:p

Tell me about it mate ,go to visit the fella and end up with a shed loads of quality parts and a empty wallet!lol

Hi Ricky

How's things mate, hope you are well!?

What TB are you running now then? I already thought you had larger TB?

As you say most of us here including me aren't tracking our cars so probably don't sense or experience our cars on the limit to know whether things such as filters are really making any difference. It's good to hear from someone like you that actually can compare. Just a shame from what you have said that the piper cross ones don't fit well. Olly at PCS fitted bmc for me a few years ago. My stock ones were knackered anyway so I needed them changed. They seem good quality and I've done nothing other than clean them, but I couldn't honestly say whether they'e made any difference in performance.

Been a long time mate, we all seem to be doing our own things these days my friend:o My TB is currently is the 78m body, (known as the 80mm), however I do have a 82mm TB in the office, but really holding back fitting it, due to all the previous past probmatic posts on this fitment, do i want all that additional expense and potential ongoing grief fitting this TB, maybe later. albeit asking myself where it will get me, regarding the current crop of ultra fast AMG cars the guys here now have these days:doh:

Regards the filters, just me swapping in and out mate to see what works, minimal gains at best, if anything, but happy to explore whats out there at no great expense the IGT filters arrived for my trip to Mikes last weekend, bloody things fell straight into the lower box, too small! wrong filters!! have sent them back and re ordered new ones, so await their arrival. I would add I was a little shocked to the amount of oil within the the parcelled filter bag, it was sodden, so whilst trialling these filters, I am not fully confident with them, could well see me switching back to Piper cross, but will see how the Igt are first.

Will give you a call shortly regards that item you are kindly sitting on for me, I really need to deal with all that, many thanks for your patience with this kit.:thumb:
