Michael_Schumacher crashes!

"The public have a right to know" and we have the right to lie, distort and corrupt.

"Tell me Mrs Jones, you have just seen your husband decapitated, your daughter sold into sexual slavery and your infant child smothered, how do you feel?"

Any body who has sat through as many trials as I have and then read the press version of what happened would know that distortion to suit their owners agenda is their bible. Lower than vermin whilst claiming the moral high ground.

Leave MS alone, not in this world!

Bear in mind that a lot of victims and their families sell their stories to the Press. And get paid handsomely for it.

Which regrettably is true, however having seen grieving relatives at trials and inquests trapped by the gentlemen of the press on a number of occasions I don't think two wrongs make a right. How many of those people who sold their stories came to regret it when they saw the version that was published?

I totally agree with this, the number of trials I have been through and the number of press statements I have given only to see them twisted or taken out of context to sell Newspapers or pep up a slow news day.

Some of the journalist and hacks I have met leave me feeling sick they would stoop at nothing to get a story, they are the lowest of the low, personally I'd rather wipe Vladimir Putin's ar*e than associate with them.

What is it they say "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" oh how true this is.

I don't know the ins and outs procedures prior to print - but i would guess anyone who agrees to a payment deal has had it done with all legalities covered.
Some of the stories i have read are simply poor, lazy , casual reporting with not enough details - but nothing as far as i am aware of gross distortion of facts.(i'm not saying it doesn't happen - but is exception rather than rule)
Yes there is Press intrusion - and the recent Malaysian tragedy is appalling as grieving victims families had to endure a barrage of cameras and flash bulbs
Which begs the question -what the hell where the airport authorities thinking of to allow this gross intrusion and total failure to families ?

As you say you don't know the procedures. Let me tell you what I know from the managing editor of a newspaper group and also from solicitors who have acted for newspapers. Unless the person selling the story is savvy enough to get legal representation prior to discussing the sale with the paper then the only legal niceties that are involved are to ensure the paper is fireproof and the contract will reflect that.

Now, how many ordinary people with a story to sell do you suppose seek such advice beforehand ?

Not exactly a contest of equals is it?

Have you ever tried to hold back a pack of Fleet Streets finest from a story?
The police struggle so what chance has the staff of an airport? How does a poor person get to be heard when they have been misquoted, what... tell the press? Dog does not eat dog.

You've lost your credibility. You're ranting.:)

You are going to be a good addition to this forum. Either answer the argument or don't comment. My credibility does not rest in your hands and we really don't need another lazy name caller.

How does the man in the street get redress against both invasion and distortion?
How do you control the intrusive reporter?
Where are the accounts of press misbehavior reported (except at the bottom of page 16 when they are forced to?
How do you account for the complaints, albeit muffled, about the press made to various bodies, are they all "ranting"?

And most importantly, which paper do you work for? As the old Fleet St saying goes "I think we should be told"

You really haven't been here long enough to judge whether or not he has any credibility to lose...as it happens he has and on this occasion brings professional perspective and personal observation to the machinations of the media.
I rather suspect you're a troll and are probably either a disgruntled ex member or a current member in disguise with an ax to grind.
And here I am again breaking my own rule about DFTT!

This thread was good for updates on Schumi's condition

Can we keep it that way please?

You can start new threads on newspapers, credibility etc and all rant there if you wish

In line with updates... apparently Gerhard Berger was also involved in a skiing accident...

For Schumi, sadly updates are not good:
Doctors treating Michael Schumacher and other medical experts have told his family that "only a miracle" can save him, sources have claimed.

I know nothing about Formula 1 but can someone explain to me why Schuey is so disliked. I see nothing different in his win at any cost attitude than say Senna's who is remembered like a god ????

Probably a bit like Ali and Tyson.
One had the greatest natural talent who was amazing to watch and the other was basically a street fighter who bludgeoned his way to the top.

Dont know as I quite like MS. Cant say the same about L. Hamilton

Difference is that Senna died on the track, which automatically elevated him to God-Like status.

But most of the viewing public loved Senna even before he died perhaps it was just his charisma which Schuey is lacking

Schumacher is only really disliked in the UK by the press and a minority of UK fans, he was the guy everyone wanted to see beaten elsewhere (except Germany and Italy by and large), but I wouldn't say he was disliked outside of the UK.

The UK press went after him when he knocked Damon Hill out of the race and the championship at Adelaide in 1994 and they never forgave him even if, in my opinion, it wasn't a cynical move. After that a far more cynical move on Villeneuve at Jerez in 1997 (although Villeneuve would never have made that corner) combined with him being German and winning ... a lot.... made him the perfect villain for the UK press and some of the fans latched on to this.

There were many other instances where he was accused of pusshing the rules to the edge of the envelope etc. but that is what great sports people do.... he will ultimately be remembered for 91 GP wins and 7 world championshps long after any misdemeanours are forgotten.

Senna was very similar although probably with more natural talent, but his on track antics even though far more pre-meditated were usually against Prost rather than Nigel Mansell so he had an easier ride from the UK press although he wasn't universally adored by any means until he died in 1994 when his detractors suddenly found their latent adoration.

Dying on the track kind of elevated him to legend status.... even if he was already a legend to many before then!

Sadly the future is looking bleak for Michael, but I shall choose to remember his great drives for Benetton and Ferrari such as Spa 1995, Spain 1994, Spain 1996, Canda 1998, Japan 2000 etc.

thanks !
