Guys,

I have recently just purchased a 2014 E63 AMG S, its on 25k miles and i have had a few things done.

(If you want to skip to my questions and avoid the back story just scroll down)

Wrapped in titanium grey and some fettling at MSL, downpipes/remap and its a lovely savage beast now.
Having moved my Nissan GTR on for this AMG i have to say its 10x the car the GTR was and i really do love the thing.
Opened my eyes to how nice Merc's are.

I had an RS6 C6 previous to the GTR which i looked at the newer C7 once i'd realised the GTR wasnt for me but after driving my dads older W211 AMG that i found for him with only 42k on it and after driving it i knew i needed one.

This weekend just gone i gave the car a thorough once over and changed the engine oil/filter for some Gulf Racing 5w-40
I did the spark plugs using OEM Merc plugs (ball ache of a job, well just the two closest to the firewall where i had to become a contorsionist to make the tools fit)
And also changed the gearbox oil/filter/magnets etc again with OEM Merc gear, diff oil was done at the same time using Castrol Syntrax 75w-140
So i now have a base point
Its overall a very nice car to work on and not too challanging really.

Questions/Niggles

1.Software updates?
Cost?
How many modules can be updated and most importantly is there one to sort the annoying snatchy changes in S+ or M also the downblips are pathetic in comparison to the GTR/RS6 and paddle delay is enourmous!

2. slight knocking noise from the front right, sounds like a drop link but was wondering if there's a common cause before i fire two new drop links on it

3. Cabin rattles, there is one annoying rattle from the passanger seat stowage that only happens when the seat has no weight on it, also my door card rattles ever so slightly (no idea where from)

Thats really it, it has a slightly bent wheel (inner edge from a pothole) which i'll have sorted this weekend but otherwise the car is genuinely amazing! the mid range torque and overall driveablity is scary!

Nice mate I also went from a tuned gtr to a w212 63

Sorry can't really help you with your questions but that's the main downfall compared to the gtr the gearbox especially in M..

If the car is under three years old then updates should be free at a main dealer. Alternatively a good indie with access to Star/Xentry Online will be able to do any outstanding updates at a better price.

There was a TCU update applied to mine around this time last year that significantly reduces the paddle response time (it'll never be as instantaneous as a DCT 'box, but it's reasonable after this update) and makes the downshift blips quite epic :D

Strut top mount on some will knock. Worth checking out with a main dealer or indie who will know the affected VIN range.

Are you certain the passenger seat rattle is from the stowage bin and not the seatbelt buckle against the side of the seat? Can't help on the door card one, I'm afraid.

Yes agreed, certainly dont miss the GTR its strange, the 63 does everything so much nicer, and the overall quality is fantastic.
The power feels better used too, less lag the only downfall as you say is the gearbox, i mean the gearbox is very bloody good at what it does, its an auto with clutches, normal driving it does 100x better than the gtr, even S+ is clever enough to leave you in gears for long periouds of time etc which is far more advanced then any auto i've used previously.
The downfall is the Manual paddles, the delay is just too great.

Thank you so very much for that, would you know of any indie's in the Teesside area?
Im currently booked into Merc main dealer in teesside for a "full update" barring ECU of course.
So are you saying this could come out quite costly? unfortunately the car is just out of warranty being just over 3yrs old.
Its nowhere near as quick as the DCT granted but its a lot stronger and i dont miss the clattering and stupid TCU for auto mode in the GTR's DCT.

One and only thing i feel the GTR does better and its an obvious one is launches and its much easier to initiate one in the GTR, the E63 is "complex" as far as Lauch control systems go.
I also find its not much quicker than just accelrating away in S+ mode.

But regardless its such a nice place to be,

Top mounts you say... interesting, drivers side was actually creaking then stopped and now there is a slight knock present over rough road, say if theres 2 or 3 ripples in a row you get a vibration through the car and a knock from the front strut.

Sorry, can't help with indies around Teesside but I'm sure someone here will know. Regarding cost to do the updates at a Main Dealer, I honestly couldn't tell you but at £100+ per hour for labour, nothing's cheap!

I'll make a seperate post asking about Teesside indies!

Yeah i know, they asked to have the car the full day as well.... i think i might need to give them a call and confirm i wont be paying a fortune for all these updates.
should be rolled out free imo

Hey bud,

I just had the same recent line of questioning on here and everyone was very informative.

I picked up my '14 E63S on Sunday and insisted they update the TCU before handover even though it was a month outside of warranty.

If useful I have the Xentry report in PDF I can email you if you wish. Has the mid-16 TCU update on it and a ventilation update too.

Otherwise glad to here of your comparison to the GTR. I've just come from a PP C63 and the improvement in comfort, fit and finish let alone the power is awesome!

Yes please that would be great, how are your throttle blips? are they obvious? as aobve st13phil stated he got much "throatier" blips with the new update.

I am going to argue the toss if they come up with some silly figure i need to pay, its a software update it should be free of charge.

Sorry to go off topic mate but where did you get the ds2500 from?

Course man, got them from JDL Brakes. http://www.jdl-brakes.com/ferodo-ds2500-pads-frp3133h.html?___SID=U

The callipers are the same brembo callipers as used on the RS6 C6/C7 so pad availablity is good.

Your E63 really does look gorgeous! i'm very new to the Merc game and learning more and more day by day.
Getting hands on was fun and made me feel like i knew the car a lot more, i'd love to push things further in the future and go big turbo's but who knows!

Thanks bud are they available for the rears aswell? Also do you still run the sensors?

Turbos on this car would have some nice in gear acceleration im going to leave it where I am probably with this one though! Just had my 1st born so my misses gets to drive this car lol

Said it before, but this is the kind of info that's completely missing from AMG forums - Almost no information out there for performance upgrades except from saying go Weistec or Renntech, who just rebrand Bosch and NGK stuff add on +100% markup. :dk:

Also +1 on that plugs, did mine in January and ended up giving up and taking to a specialist. (Again, wanted to put some uprated ones in but no info out there and refuse to be bent over pay Weistec/Renntech for rebranded ones)

Oh dear, bet its great to be your missus haha! id be well happy taking a 730bhp merc to yoga hahaha! I joke i joke.
I'd love to go further as power play on these is silly and cheap in comparison to the GTR/RS6 i had previous.
But i think this has a lot to do with market, Mercs are not huge modded cars at least in the UK anyway, whereas Audi's BM's seem to get more of that attension.
Thats why i avoided them (before actually driving my dads E63 W211) and then i realised they are not the odd ones out because they are rubbish they are the odd ones out because Mercedes has the same stigma Honda have... "old persons car" and the Merc is FARRRR from that, it is far more agile/elegant/technolgically superior to my RS6 and even i have to admit the GTR.
The launch control (RS Mode) and the overall way it boosts by gear to get the upmost traction is very impressive, it doesnt just cut the power like most traction systems it really does let you play and is very clever at detecting conditions....
Anyway enough waffle sorry!

No i dont use the sensors, just good old eye method, loop the two wires on the plug to "bridge" out the sensor.

Agreed, as above i avoided Mercs as the mod base is so small and the forums so empty of actual useful information its hard to find anything, all i ever read is "Go to rentech" "go to MSL" now that might be good advice and certainly having dealt with Acid and Amio at MSL i have to admit they are great guys and people i'd be happy to trust in the future.
But it doesnt help when i want to find things on my own...

Watch this space i'll be finding out all i can while i own this car, plugs were a right gentlemans sausage to do but once the back two were out the way the other 6 were quite easy.
The whole engine comes apart very easy, all clip on easy remove plastics with good access.
even the coil pack design is clever.... but it wasnt an easy job.

As for rear pads, no i havent sourced anything yet, managed to find out that you can get rear discs from Pagid at £129 each and you can use EBC Yellowstuff pads for the rear.
But these are all i can find for now, ideally i'd rather run something a bit more robust than the EBC's but i'll update as and when i find anything.

IF you want to make a thread and we'll try get together all the info on cross parts etc then do that and maybe we can get it made a sticky?

EBC yellow stuff's are all i can find at the moment...

Its just a brembo 4 pot calliper, so worst case you could send some pads to Ferrodo/Carbon Lorraine etc and they will make you pads.

IF we got so many orders they'd probably market the pad for general sale.

Yes mate a sticky sounds good I came across a few days ago porterfield do a front and rear setup for the e63 I ran these on my R35 with Alcons and where great and seem popular in the gtr community

Heard of these too, do we have any links? the rear calliper on our E63's is shared over various Mercs so surely someone makes some pads somewhere?

I think they where listed on the us website but not uk the other day when I checked!

I was speaking to someone about making custom brake bells for the e63 and they mentioned the rear pads are an odd fitment/size

BG Developments would be able to rig up a custom kit for the rear brakes if needs be.
As i said all i could find at the time was EBC Yellow's

I'll do some digging now.
