Opinions needed on subwoofer..

I still disagree about the sub sapping power from the fronts...

I've never had a 4 channel amp that has only one set of inputs...even budget stuff!
And even if it did, the amp would just split the signal inside...

A lot of very top line amps have seperate power supplys and connectors for each channel, but we are getting into amps that are like a £1k a piece...

Another factor is that the equipment is said to be 10% and the installation 90%, i don't personally agree with those ratios, but the installation can make or break the system...

Thanks for all the info..
I'm kind of looking for a low cost alternative...
A 10" Sony Xplod sub with box (carpetted) is priced at about 50 quid..
I want the amp, sub and fitting all together to be around 70 quid
I'm on a tight budget I know...
However, I have seen shops sell amp together with sub at a reduced price...
For example, a shop is selling: Kenwood KAC-723 2ch amp with a Kenwood 10" sub together for 67 quid...
I've seen better offers elsewhere... Sansui 2ch amp + 10" sub (brand unknown).. for 50 quid...

However, I am also considering second hand...
How do I check for the condition, wear and tear etc of the amp and sub?
Also, any recommendations?

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks for your input mate..
However, I am located in Hong Kong... Which means the site would be of little relevance since prices are cheaper here for subs I think...

Anyway, do you have any idea how to check for wear and tear and the condition of an amp and sub?

Thanks,
jeff

A little off topic - but i have just looked at talkaudio (thanks Ricky) and thought i would post a couple of the more 'low key' subwoofer installations i saw , in order to give everyone some ideas for how to install their subwoofers unobtrusively !! ;)

By listening to it...
You should be able to push the woofer to near it's limits without any grating noises.

There is no one way to test them unless you have expensive testing equipment.

I've bought loads of second hand gear in the past, and have just gone with my ears...

By the way, you don't wanna here burf's car with the two 32" subs...pretty mental, but i've heard some that will suck the air from your chest with one 15"...just too much!! haha

You can get some good 10" VIbe boxes with built in Amps.

Again, relative...

The vibe active subs are easily some of the best, but the infinity is definately more controlled and nice to listen to...the vibes can be a little boomy, but definately win the all out output contest.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions...
I would be going to a local audio shop before I go home tonight...
See if there's anything decent there for sale..

Another question...
I use a tape kind of connector that goes into my cassette insert to connect the car audio with my iPod.. However, I notice that the volume seems not very constant.. i.e. you can hear the volume changing up and down slightly... What's more annoying is that it happens like this:
volume down for 2 secs then back up for a while...

This problem is especially noticeable in low volumes..
Any ideas guys?
I don't really fancy the idea of changing the headunit as I don't really want the missus to find out...

Thanks all,
Jeff

P.S. Are there any other ways to connect the iPod to my car? I've tried the FM transmitter (sp) but I'm not really satisfied with the quality..
Oh and also, the cassette connector works very well on my other car.. no volume fluctuations.. Is it possible for me to have a cable that runs from my iPod to the back of the headunit (if there's an input jack there).. ?

Thanks once again,
Any info. is gReatly appreciated..
Jeff
