Police officers put wrong fuel in cars.

For despite police managers spending thousands of pounds installing "talking" petrol caps on their vehicles which play a recorded reminder not to use the wrong fuel, petrol has been put into diesel vehicles over 300 times.

Why are they putting "petrol" caps (talking or otherwise) on diesel cars anyway? That's just asking for trouble...

I have to confess on my way home from work ive been caught out at shell recently with there new pump logo designs, Luckily it was just a case of putting V-power in instead of standard Unleaded (my car dosent seem to keen on V-power)

I read somewhere apparently that some of the miss fuels have been put down to the drivers being stressed and that they drive different cars often so can forget which they are driving. Motor traders and taxi drivers are the same but you rarely hear of them making this mistake.

Could it be that the nozzle is causing the misfuelling problems? :)

Makes me recall a transport depot in the Manchester area.

The manager (who was rumoured to be over promoted) was boasting about the cheap fuel he had sourced.

Unfortunately he discovered too late that it was cheap diesel, because it was Petrol. Good few of the companies HGV, and company car fleet had put fuel in... (this does make me wonder how true the story was - surely they would have found out pretty soon?!).

Surely when he rang up for the fuel he was either asked which fuel he wanted or he would have stated what he wanted? The answer of "petrol" would have been a give away me thinks.. sounds like urban mith time again.

Remember the good old days when the speaker system would crackle into life and the attendant voiced loud and proud 'are you SURE you want that pump sir?'.

Police drivers get points on thier police licence for mis-fueling, however I also think that it should be paid for by the officer.:thumb:

Actually I don't.

If I make a mistake at work and I cause a customer to lose money, the company pays, not me. I get into trouble etc yes, but not made to cover the liability.

Its not difficult to put the right fuel in, perhaps the police should avoid shell stations.

I would have thought they'd have their own fuel stored in depots/stations to have the cars prepared before they go out on the job.

Sadly its not down to the fuel stations used, it really is down to the officer lobbing in the wrong juice:wallbash:

If you work on a customers vehicle and and cost error is made of course it should be covered by your boss, mistakes happen.

I just dont feel that the public should cover such a basic and preventable mistake. This line of thought does not extend to other areas of policing.:)

We're all human, I am all for what you say in principle, but it sets a very dangerous precident for those in other areas of employment who make a simple blunder.

Perhaps a more suitable punishment like misfuel a car, off the driving job for 3 weeks and given something more menial.

You know that may work, but then in the counties where they single crew cars that may mean you've lost a patrol, and their short staffed as it is nowadays:dk:

I had someone who worked for me who when he had major issues with a nearly new 125cc motorbike he had just bought returned it to the dealer complaining and threatening them with trading standards etc.

The found the cause of the problem, the idiot had put DIESEL in a MOTORBIKE.

Cue a barrage of banter and abuse from all who heard the story, which he thought was unfair because he "wasn't used to putting fuel in things"..

To say he wasn't the sharpest tool in the box was understatement of the century.

I can better that! Honda pan european filled with diesel by m/cycle cop at wsb meeting! Lost count of the 100's of cars and vans i've recovered for wrong fuel , as a police workshop we usually re- charge it out to the offending department but it doesn't make much difference, police culture == don't care=not my fault=it wasn't me & favourite one (i was on a shout) last 15 years of baby sitting them i've seen it all!!!!

Quite a number of industries do - restaurant trade for one.
