Power car polishing / buffing / waxing

Righty then I have my porter cable through. I'm getting my stuff through from screwfix tomorrow through.

One question is do I need to cut the American plug off the porter cable and wire the one I get from screwfix on to fit the transformer unit?

Yes thats correct, the wiring on the PC is American colours cant remember which is live and which negative, i think if it is wired wrong it will go slow. This will answer all your questions

When wiring the plug remember in the US : White is neutral, Black is live and Green is earth. See the following weblink for more details.

Sonus Swirl Buster System - for Porter Cable.

I have recently purchased a new pad for the Porter Cable and this has produced some excellent results.

If you go to the autopia website you can find this new system which is a bit of a cheat but is really excellent.

Go to: http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?autopia+MBWu4u+index.html+

Select "Car Polishers and pads" on the left hand navigation.

Then Sonus Swirl Buster Polishing Pad. This is used in conjunction with Sonus Swirl Buster Polish.

The polish is acrylic so can be used in conjunction with Autoglym, Klasse and AutoLak. The polish works by polishing and then filling so it rounds the scratches and then fills them.

It is a cheat because you can use this and then go straight to applying a Sealant glaze. The results are really swirl free. Well worth getting the product.

I had a real problem recently becauase of some bird lime and the garage using a dirty sponge  This sorted it beautifully.

If anyone is interested. Just purchased a orbital polisher with 7 inch lambs wool bonnet and achieved same results as goldfish 11. The polisher was purchased from Netto (of all places - 'its scandanavian for value') for £19.99 complete with bonnet, and I located another outlet which sells the bonnets for £7. No need for any power conversion as set up for the U.K. voltage

Your paintwork must have been in amazing condition before you started. I tried the cheap option and it just didnt have the clout to deal with my swirl all those years ago.

The Netto polisher is OK (I have one) and certainly has the clout to deal with swirls if used with the right pads - the issue is getting the pads as the backing plate is 180mm (unusually large for automotive pads) and the thread is M16 (most UK spec backing pads are M14) so that can't be swapped either.

I have gone for a system which uses "the edge" pads which can come with a M16 adaptor.

If anybody knows of a M16 to M14 adaptor (M16=female, M14=male) please point me in the right direction!

ROBO - all I can say is well done! Agree with Goldfish that the original paint must have been really good though as the bonnet etc simply wouldn't be able to deal with swirls/scratches etc. I got holograms the first time I tried using mine and I am supposed to know what I'm doing :o

guys ive just ordered the silverline orange polisher as i dont want to spend over £200 on the PC just yet. Anyway, it comes with some pads, red, blue and white... could someone tell me which i should use for general polishing..

do i just apply polish onto the pad and polish away, followed by the buffing bonnet i assume?

this is the kit

I considered Silverline before splashing out on the Porter Cable - I used to sell Silverline products, and the quality is good, and aftersales services was fantastic. I couldn't trust myself not damaging the paint though!!

See THIS tread, Silverline professional in use.

You only need the Blue for polishing and Red for final polishing. The white is for cutting 2 pack and celulose.

thanks dieselman, actually it was your recommendation that made me go for the silverline...

Ow thanks Jay.

I need to use mine again as since the polishing excercise one rear wing has had the arch redone and isn't as shiney.
Might even do it tonight now..

The pads will rip up fairly quickly, especially if you touch anything like a wiper or door handle.
Remember to mask off handle areas not to be done.

As far as buffing I would do it by hand, it will be easy.

Just spotted that.

I have requested the posibility of picking one up, as it looks like a good deal, and my car needs more pampering.

I will let you know if I can pick one up as I could do the same for other members here. (In MK sometime this week as well as Northampton area on Friday).
