Private Registration plate change

Do they do it whilst you wait?

Yes, but they may charge you for fitting.

I did mine myself just use the old plates as a template. Also keep the old plates for when you sell the car as it will revert back to the old number and this way you'll save some money back. :thumb:

If he sells the personalised registration (or transfers it to another car and keeps the current car) the car would revert to it's original number, so the old plates are worth saving.

I had the scenario myself where I transferred a plate from my 210 to my RR. I couldn't find (more thank likely binned) the original plates and had to buy new plates with the original registration for the 210.

You've misinterpreted 'old plates' the OP has bought the physical private plate from the seller, not just the paperwork, and is now waiting for them to be delivered.

At least that's how I've read it.

I agree you keep your original plates for your reasons, but whenever I change vehicles I personally always buy new plates.

UPDATE: Got plates made up at the dealer this morning for £21 and they also gave me a free backing plate for the rear one as well as the 3M sticking tape. Fantastic service by Mercedes Benz Grangemouth

That's about my budget but I'd have preferred one with a Mercedes logo on it. Do halfords do it on the spot?

Bear in mind it is not legal to have car logos on your plates - only the GB letters , Euro symbol and four national flags may be used .

The regs are clearly available on DVLA website .

As stated earlier by others do your research before jumping in the deep end. Saving on plates will be lost when you get pulled for having non- compliant items on your car and then have to purchase a new set.
Question to myself - why do people want to do something different to what the law permits? Think I'm getting old!

Aww Mike dont get me started on this subject:o Pete

Bit late now but I have mine done at some online firm, plate demon or something like that.

There is a workaround which lets you print off very plain plates (my preference), no flags or makers name just the bare legal requirements.

I was robbed, then - £32 plates and (rivet) fixing.

I was quite surprised aswell when I phoned them up so I went over and 10mins later they were ready. They are laminated on an aluminium plate and they also gave me a free insert plastic board for the rear one and the sticky 3m stuff. I asked the chap to drill the front ones too and not a penny extra was added. Really great service

I've been going through some old paperwork on my SL, and there is a fail certificate where a previous owner had mis-spaced the reg, which would have read R4G XX at the time! Harmless enough, I would have thought.
