I've just changed my rear tyres after taking the car for an MOT. I check the tyres regularly so I was surprised that the MOT tester said I needed new tyres. There was uneven wear across the rears with one side so badly worn on the inside it was smooth. The tester said I needed a 4-wheel allignment done.

I spoke to a large local tyre dealer to book the car in for the allignment. He said he has seen a few R230s with this problem which an allignment will not cure and that Mercedes are aware of this.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks Carnut. Just had a call back from Mercedes. The rate of wear will determine if I have anything worse than needing wheel allignment. A wear rate (in inches) of 3-2-1 is aparently fine.

Update

I booked the car into a specialist used by my local Mercedes dealer (£50 cheaper by approaching them directly) and had a 4 wheel laser allignment done. The wheels were out of kilter and cleaned and polished I looked forward to 350 happy miles ahead.

Happy? Yes it was great and I managed to maintain 28.6 mpg at 80 mph. Unusually I struggled to maintain a warm cabin temperature and I realised the cabin heating had failed!! I froze all the way to Kent. Still I guess a very enjoyable way to have your bits frozen this side of winter.
A visit to the stealership is on the cards. Thank God the car is still under warranty.

Glad to hear the tyre problem was sorted. I have my SL booked in for alignment too but that's only because the steering wheel isn't straight ahead. I'm guessing the alignments been adjusted by Kwik Fitup or such at some time. Interesting on the cabin heating. My wifes Honda Accord had exactly the same problem at it turned out to be the control cable for the flaps that direct the hot air had become disconnected. Hopefully yours will be as simple.

Regards,

Thanks Burger. I do hope its something simple but happy to have Mercedes sort and pay for it. Lets hope its that simple. I spoke to a friendly Merc technician who was very surprised to hear of heater failure in an SL. Said he had seen a few on the E Class but not the SL.

You may be right that a wrong un has taken a spanner to your car sometime in the past.
