Resetting auto gearbox memory without disconnecting battery..

Tried it yesterday.

The car does seem quicker, like when I first bought it. It now upshifts to 5th after 85mph, in W mode

Flashing lights behind me... ;)

I'm going to give this a go when I get Edna back. Don't think the owner of the E320 CDI I'm driving at the mo would be too pleased
E320 CDi - GO ON, TRY IT !

If nothing else this might make the first third of my gas pedal (ie the only bit I can use without screwing the engine up for the rest of the journey) more lively ;)
It has indeed made the first third of my gas pedal travel more fun, the second two thirds however still make the stupid thing miss-fire.

Nick change your coil packs. I still think one is shorting out under load.

How interesting!

I recently got back from a 2 month trip to Australia and had left my SLK 230 with its battery disconnected while I was away. I noted the improvement immediately and wondered if it was just illusory. Now I know it isn't.

Has anyone tried premium unleaded fuel? I gave it a go last week (3p/litre more than the bog standard preparation) and did 360 miles before the yellow light came on &, moreover, the car seemed to run more smoothly. Anyone else found the same?

tried this today, her indoors noted the difference i will try it on my next trip,

im sure this is some bizarre kind of mind trick ;) but, i tried this last night and sure enough i felt an improvement in the transition between gears and in general all through the gears the car felt a little perkier :D

I'm really confused. (Easily done!) I thought the process of switching on ignition, depressing accelerator etc. only reset the throttle. Can anyone confirm that this process does reset the transmission too. I can't really see how it can. Maybe I'm getting just a little cynical in my advancing years. If, as I suspect that is the case, is disconnecting the battery for half an hour or so the only way to reset the auto box?

Had forgotten all about this so a BIG thanks to Grav888 for posting the link on another thread.

Have just done the deed to Edna and it does seem to work. The test for me is reverse as she can be bloody slow deciding to go backwards sometimes. After this reset there was no lag - straight off!! Seemed to have fun going forwards too

The electronic automatic transmission reset is a different process, IIRC it is some combination of moving the lever all the way to 1 and then back up again before starting the car. I don't remember the whole thing :(

Hi,

Would this work on a w124 4 speed auto (1991)

Cheers

Sorry Paul, no. I tried and it made sod all difference. I tried on my Coupe too. At first I thought it had made a difference but the difference was me :D and the fact that I hadnt driven it for a while.

HI again Ian,

I think I may have the placebo effect here then, as mine definatly seems more urgent especially in E!

Who knows?

The problem with this reset malarky is that the only reason that the 'box/ throttle picked up the "soft" settings in the first place is because of our usual driving styles, with so much traffic around on all the roads.

So a reset gives a livelier performance, but after a few days the 'box starts thinking: "Hang on, what a sedate old codger I have behind the wheel here! I know, I'll slip into sloppy-dozy mode 'coz they really aren't giving me much of a work out. Can't even think why he reset me, he obviously doesn't appreciate the effort I took to be responsive." Of course, the 'box brain doesn't know you are commuting down clogged-up roads day after day, hence the average of 12mph.

If you insist on doing regular resets, be aware that the gearbox will become suspicious, untrusting and eventually resentful of your demands. At that point, it will take more than a bunch of flowers to sort it out.

I've just bought a C43 and thought to myself that its get up and go had mostly got up and gone. Will try this before leaving work tonight.

I have tried this procedure on my c230k, I have to say it made a difference, car feels more responsive and gear changes are more precise and predictable 1st to 2nd when cold is far better and its not just my imagination, since changing the atf and having the battrey off for some time the gear changes have been worse.

Well, it made a significant improvement to throttle response, but yes I suspect the MAF sensor is faulty. Is there a easy diagnostic check I can do, or do I have to take it to the local dealers to verify it?

I'm a hands on chap, and do a lot of work on my cars myself - I work in a specialist car restoration shop.

There is no easy check without diagnostic equipment, if faulty they often don't show a recorded fault either, so the actual values have to be checked, with the engine at certain rpm and load, often this is overlooked, try cleaning it first, this was a big problem on VW diesels that I have experience of.
