Rough Gear Changes - Changing ATF

I believe MB fluid is made by Fucsh oils and isn't Dexron III. I'd stick to MB fluid as ATF contains seal swellers and conditoners which are right for that box.
It's interesting to read Jay's account, I presume no issues with Dexron III, Jay.?

Again lots of great info. I may well print this thread out for my speciallist.
If Jay says so its godda be true :-)
I'm willing to give Dexron3 a whirl. Phase 1 cost is £30 all in!

Not at all mate.. ive been using it for years... all my cars change gear perfectly and none of them have leaked..

me too; now up to 202k miles sweet as a nut and no leaks. Mobil ATF. I doubt the MB ATF is any different - it is just to justify the higher price.

The 722.6 gearbox doesn't use vacuum for shift smoothness, it's all electronic.

As far as brakes and vacuum, the servo bleeds vacuum when the brakes are not being applied and stops leaking it away when they are, hence gives vacuum assistance.

Dano

I apologise as DM is correct - my vacuum remarks inappropriate for your car.

For some reason I thought it was a 320 coupe like mine we were discussing
I must pay more attention.

Don't beat yourself up about it, you're normally bang on..we all confuse models sometimes..;) :)

Thinking back, the first time i used the stuff, im pretty sure I checked that the container said it was suitable for MB spec XXX which i cross referenced with owners manual...

I went back to Bolton Motor Works yesterday for part 2 of 2.

Fluid drained again, gearbox filter, new gasket pan, a further 3.5 litres of Dexron 3
Gearchanges very smooth, even at high speed/revs
Cost £70
Total cost including part 1, £100 :)

I think the Fuchs ATF is available at GSF; their prices for Fuchs oils seem to be reasonable.

I stuck the mb stuff in mine and the atf 3 in wifes car both drive the same.

Local auto box place laughed when i spoke of the mb fluid he said they always use dex 3 and never had any probs.

I use several manufactures database's but found this the most helpful;

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

Oils have a huge mark up and like a lot of brands they are made by other companies to their spec.

This is one of the last jobs on my list for my w210, 1998 but not sure the best approach as box is 'sealed for life' with no usable dipstick - I'll have a quick search to see what's what.
