Hi

If a member was selling a car on here and you asked for the VIN number via a PM would you expect to get it?

Being an honest and trusting type i cant see the problem disclosing a VIN to someone on here who has been a member for years and when you can view their history etc etc. Most VIN's are displayed in the windscreen surely for anyone to see when car is parked?????

Please answer in the poll whether or nor you would disclose you VIN to me (230K) via a PM.

Thanks for this in advance just trying to see am expecting too much.

Having just bought a vehicle, and having spoken to a lot of dealers and private sellers, most are happy to provide VIN over the phone, generally once they know you are serious, and secondly when they know your real name and contact details.

So with regard to members on here, if they have a reasonable number of posts, 10 plus perhaps, I would be happy to provide my VIN.

Hi

Come on folks 14 people have voted, 4 have said NO and 10 have said yes but only one has given a reason.

Thanks so far,

I would give the VIN to a prospective purchaser on here.

When performing an HPI check you need the VIN so would expect to receive/give it for that purpose anyway.

The idea of not disclosing the VIN is so the whole world can't see it, but I think regular members are unlikely to be into cloning cars.

I voted Yes. I don't see any reason not to provide the VIN.
Especially to a long standing member of this forum.
I would also be quite interested to to hear the reasons against.

Yes....why not, most are on the windsceen nowadays for everyone to see.

no real reason to "hide it" anybody can see mine if they walk past the car it's stamped into the bulkhead and is clearly visible through the screen.

There is too much paranoia on the net. Hiding number plates, not disclosing VIN numbers etc etc all because of the slim possibility that someone will clone your car.

Maybe we should all remove all the pictures of our cars in case someone sees them and decides to use them for something dodgy :D

Yes vote from me

You'll be suggesting that the name on my birth certificate is not Bobby Dazzler next... :D

As has been said before, the VIN is visible in the windscreen for all to see, so I would have no problem in 'PMing' it to a member.

I would not be so happy to publish it on here in full open public view.

I would provide it to members with any sort of history on the site. With new members I might be a little more reluctant, and maybe try and speak to them first.

For example there's no way I'd PM it to you with just 762 posts and 4 years membership under your tyres.

John (glojo) might just about scrape it with 10,000 plus posts!! :D

I would have no issue giving people on this forum a VIN, its in the windscreen where any passer by can see it....

ALL

Thanks for the support so far it is great. I was getting paranoid.

Thanks,

Also voted Yes. Dont have a problem with supplying the VIN. If it was me buying the car and the seller refused to supply the VIN Id walk away.

I voted yes. Not only have I given my VIN to people there is a screenshot of my car's EPC datacard right here on the forum if you find the thread for it! :)
