I'm all in favour of lively, well reasoned and stimulating debate but I really do not see the need for the confrontational challenges that sometimes take place.

Chill!

Ditto

I also have no problem providing my VIN / Reg No. if i where selling the car both are on public display anyways.

And if i where looking for a VIN/Reg to clone i could easy do a search and get the registration number then call up the selling dealer and ask for the VIN to allow me to run my own checks and its done simple as that.

I'm sure people who do stuff like that for a living have more effective ways to accomplish the task than sitting around waiting for somebody to post up the info.

Somehow I think you've rather missed the point.....if I'm wrong I apologise.

I've missed the point? How so.

I'm intentionally leaving any personal issues out of it here because thats none of my business mate.

But from how i read it the OP asked would i provide my VIN to them if i where selling a car and the answer is yes i would i have more important things to worry about than fussing over information on public display.

I appreciate not everybody feels that way.

If i have messed up I'm sorry also.

I dont think either party is really out of order here. Its relates more to how people look at things. For me issuing a VIN is no big deal as ive requested it when buying cars (for HPI purposes) and issued it when selling however other people may have a different perspective on this and I respect that.

Lets chill and have a good weekend! ..even though i'm working on Monday ;)

The post was a simple private question. What is the problem?? Someone alleges that it was directed against them so what?? It has to be directed at someone on the forum it even states it in the question!!

Read below the original question.

"If a member was selling a car on here and you asked for the VIN number via a PM would you expect to get it?"

The overwhelming majority 90% say YES they would disclose a VIN to me 230K. Thanks.

If someone decides that it was directed at them (again i stress maybe it is directed at that person or maybe it isnt, there are a few people selling cars on this forum so who knows) that is their porogative, but thinking its directed at them and posting so are really doing nothing to advance things and really have spoiled a very informative thread.

230K has done nothing wrong here. To date 2+ people think i have done something wrong.

Furthermore i do think it is in the spirit of the forum, well at least it was.

230K

I agree entirely - the poll should never have been posted.

Sorry i disagree the poll should have been posted.

Someone shouldnt have alleged that it was directed at them:confused: .

I am deliberately keeping this a generalised point because I don't like how this is drifting.

If the question is:

"If a member was selling a car on here and you asked for the VIN number via a PM would you expect to get it?"

Then my answer is yes.

However if the question is:

Is it wrong for the seller of a car to refuse to give a prospective customer the VIN number of his car?

Then my answer would be, NO

It is all about choice and if a seller is unsure then hopefully they will seek an unbiased opinion from someone they respect?

There are no winners here and this forum is renowned for its camaraderie

kind regards to all
John

i have voted yes as the vin number can be seen in the windscreen of both my cars anyway so no problem.if your serious about selling a car you should help out as much as possible if you want rid of the vehicle
