Yup no problem from me, a member here very kindly PM'd me the VIN of his Viano when I was researching shiny bits for the Vito.

What is the difference between a long standing member,or a short sitting member .

About 24 inches..

I have to say I find this poll not in the spirit of the board. It is I who 230K's is directing this matter. In fact I have not refused him the VIN. Initially I gave him the russian site read out. He came back to me and said he wanted the number itself and when I asked him why he told me that he did not trust the russian site and that he wanted to do an HPI check. I was unsure about this so asked a few people who said that it was OK, so I decided to give it to him, that was yesteday and I had intended to send it today after I had taken more photograph's of specific areas of the car that he requested (in aditition to those I already supplied) and I wrote earlier today saying that with the weather I had not been able to take them (He also asked for a picture of the underside of the car). Next thing I see is this poll.

If I were selling, yes. Likewsie I did not mask reg numbers when selling on ebay.

You may have been better having that conversation with 230k as I don't think he was intending to disclose who his dealings might be with.

Some doors are best left closed.

As I said I don't think the post is in the spirit of the board, I did not refuse him the VIN, and I did not "open the door" as you put it.

Hi Ian,
I'm very much with Dieselman regarding this issue. We have all been asked a straightforward question and speaking for myself, I have answered it in an honest, straight forward manner.

With the greatest of respect to your good self, I fear you have gone very public on something that should have been discussed behind CLOSED doors. We are all different and if we decide not to disclose details about our vehicles the so be it. If I asked a seller a question about their car ie what's the serial number of the MOT? and they failed to answer it then that is there prerogative and I would draw my own conclusions.

It could be the author of this thread thought they were out of order asking for a VIN number? The answers do not mean anyone is wrong to refuse, we are all simply giving an honest opinion?

Please don't be offended by any replies as NONE were aimed at you.

Kind regards
John

Not by pm but yes if I had their address and telephone number (but still wouldn't send it through pm). It all depends on how well you know the person too.

The reason being, if a member of the criminal fraternity was looking for a specific type of car to clone where better to target than a forum specifically designed for that type of car and its possible to hack even long term forum members' account. Yeah paranoid, agreed, but having seen the results of identity theft first hand its a hassle easily avoided.

John, thanks as ever for you well balanced words. I would have prefered any "problems" (had I been given the courtesy of being told there was a "problem") to have been resolved privately, I can see that a generous interpretation of the posting of the poll might be that it was for personal assurance. That said, when I was unsure about whether to give the VIN number, I consulted others, privately.

On their advice I decided to give it. I must stress I did not refuse to give it, Had I done so I agree, it would be open to intepretation.

I absolutely accept that people people have answered a poll in an honest and straightforward manner.

My concern is that any misunderstanding was not resolved privately and that the poll was posted; again I say I do not think this action was in the spirit of the board

Best wishes,

Ian

Your caution says nothing bad about you Ian and fear not neither does this poll.

Just look past it.

Some comments are also best left to oneself. 230k knew exactly what he was doing when he posted this poll - I also knew that Ian was about to send the VIN as he'd asked my opinion privately a few days ago.

All

What can i say????

I am not at fault here by any means. I simply posted a poll to see if i was out of order asking for a VIN on a potential purchase.

I did not nor do i have any intention of disclosing names of the person or persons who did not offer a VIN when asked for it. I am above that guys.

I thought maybe i am out of order asking for a VIN maybe i come across with a devious aura in my posts that would stop someone from disclosing something as simple as a VIN, i guess i was paranoid to a certain extent and posted the poll to prove to myself that i was correct in what i was asking for and restore some lost self confidence.

For someone to allege that the poll/post was directed at them (maybe it was maybe it wasn't thats for me to know) i feel is a greater wrong than posting the poll.

I will not be drawn into the tit for tat of endless posts on this matter and would like to thank everybody who has contributed their views.

Thanks all,

230K

I don't have a problem providing VIN No: Lots of occasions you have to give it to strangers when ordering/buying parts over the phone.

Shame you don't take a leaf out of your own book Stats.

If you had stopped to think what I was saying instead of thoughtlessly posting you would have realised I was saying that no-one knew why they were being asked as it had been kept a private matter, until Ian posted.

My personal opinion is that it would have best remained a private matter. Obviously you disagree.

Yes, but I knew....as did others that I had consulted, so it was not private, how would you have reacted if the poll had been directed at you ?

I repeat yet again, I do not think that posting this poll was in keeping with the spirit of the board. It's as simple as that.

I'm all in favour of lively, well reasoned and stimulating debate but I really do not see the need for the confrontational challenges that sometimes take place.

Chill!
