Small car high mileage

Do they all have PAS - doesn't say? I'd say it's a must for all new drivers. Are those also aftermarket alloys which will up the insurance a lot

Yes to the PAS:

Not sure about the alloys - they look SEAT-y and I believe the "cool" was a special edition, so could well have had a few bolt-on extras. Worth checking if they are OE, though, you're right that it could make a big difference to the insurance premium.

Cheers,

Gaz

I think an important lesson is to accept folks opinions when they have seen a car and offer an opinion.:) Both my wife and daughter have seen other cars of a similar year and this one had an exceptional amount of scratches.

What I have learnt in life is trust, and if I'm told it is too scratched then it is tooooo scratched. :)

I have also been told that Ford's fall to pieces once they reach 100,000 miles, so here's a pile of bits NO I AM NOT GOING TO LOOK AT IT :D

In my experience, the state of the interior and exterior correlates well with how much care an owner has given a vehicle overall (including maintenance and driving behaviour).

While one would not expect a pristine car at this age, if it has too much scratches, that would indicate, in my opinion, a not very well cared for car. A car does not have to have scratches all over it at that age, as many cars out there prove all the time.

Pool cars that are spruced up by a regular visit to an autowash often get surface scratched paintwork. Don't know if this applies to this particular car or whether the scratches are deeper than this?

I don't know, some people pay good money for stickers that look like those paint spots on the roof :p. Those tiny scratches will no doubt buff out and those holes around the dash trim go well with the fake wood  ;).

Yes, and the pre positioned dents will mean that nobody will park next to it in a car park whilst shopping!

Out of evil always comes good!

"bit of smoke on start up" - probably means that the fire brigade comes out every time you start it .

Numerous scratches in excess of 12 inches in length, going down toi bare metal, plus larger exposed bare metal on a couple of corners. The car looked bad and I fully support the gang's decision to walk. What I had told them was to use the 'finger nail test' but these scratches were way beyond needing close examination.

I had seen the link kindly supplied by gaz_I but I want my daughter to take a pride in her 'new' car and buying one that already has a degree of damage is not the way to go. I have always taken pride in my cars and would never dream of selling one with cosmetic damage, plus of course it gives the buyer lee way to negotiate a better deal. We are not expecting a pristine, unblemished vehicle, but we are expecting to buy one that has been looked after.

When we bought my son his Ford Escort it was in excellent condition and when we sold it the bodywork was still in the same condition.

I enjoy showing my family how to valet a car and believe it speaks volumes about the owner. A scruffy, neglected car is a very big no, no. :o :o

Fair enough, I just remember when my little sister was looking for a 1st car. She decided on a Citroen AX as I had one of the last made and she could get one in her budget that looked the same shape ie not dated!

Problem was she went out comparing £500 8 yr old cars with one I'd just bought at about 2 yrs old for £4000!

You've caught me out... Mega embarrassment but I'm definitely not with it today.

thanks for the info

My guess John is that the trade would submit their latest cars for sale in "blocks". Perhaps once or twice a week-- maybe historically influenced by the publication deadline of the magazine which was around first. Private sellers would submit as soon as they decide to put their car up for sale. However the dearth of new cars over the last few days will be down to the EASTER weekend break I would guess with no Autotrader staff to forward process the adverts submitted.

I suspect as it is web based it is updated as and when new sellers add the details of their car. I would be very surprised if they waited until designated times to update the site.

My daughter has finally succeeded in convincing me she wants a Focus. :D

I have done my bit and laid out all the facts, but she is adaman t the look the nicest and that is what she wants.

I've given up showing her all the other vehicles that are available and am now concentrating on the one model.

It's frustrating that we live in an area that does not offer the best selection of vehicles, but we have a couple of weeks, so fingers crossed something will pop up.

has she mandated a colour too John? ;)
Hi Jon,
Good question and so far the only no, no's are white and solid red.

I think if we stick with metallic colours there is less risk of the sun bleaching the paintwork as this car will live outsie and on a very serious note...

In our location solid colours do tend to bleach, especially red. :o :o The voice of experience speaks. :)

A Focus sounds like a good choice to me. Insurance should be moderate too.

Focus is a solid car. Personally I would suggest seeing if there is any way you can increase your budget to around £2200; for around that you should be able to pick up a 2002 facelift model.

I just increased the budget to see what was the otherside of £2000   (you're worse than my daughter) and found this. We will try to get to see that one.

Couldn't find any 2002 models within a 40 mile range of our address though.
