The EV fact thread

I have a Nissan Leaf

I frequent the Leaf Facebook page occasionally.

£uck me, what a bunch of penny pinching nutters.

Tip of the day "When on the Motorway, slipstream the rear of Lorries to gain the most range" etc etc etc

FFS

It's a good job I get free leccy because if I ever turned into one of those I'd have shoot to myself

There was a comedy film back in the seventies with Walter Matthau (from memory), it's the height of the Arab oil embargo and gasoline prices in the US are sky high, his neighbour just bought a brand new VW Beeatle and keeps a written log of all journeys documenting the mileage done and all refueling logging the amount of gasoline purchased, then brags repeatedly to Walter Matthau's character about how frugal his VW Beatle is.

In revenge, Walter Matthau sneaks up to the neighbour's driveway at night, syphons out some gasoline, then a few days later pours it back into the VW Beatle's tank, repeatedly.... Thus frustrating the confused neighbour efforts :D

lol, people driving ICE cars on motorways wet themselves playing fuel tank bingo; ev drivers simply pull in behind an HGV or bus etc and relax while their range goes up and their pants stay dry🤣

Had a quick top up at the new Gridserve Electric Forecourt on the A1 by Stevenage, astonishingly good facility, this is the future. 👍

This week I passed some land acquired by Gridserve near Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham.

Porsche hasn't given up on ICE - credit to it for exploring alternative iterations.
At 19m53s in shows how the EU will still permit the sale of ICE after 2035. UK not included presumably. Here's what you could have won.

I'm still of the belief that synthetic fuels will not be able to produced in meaningful volumes in our lifetimes....and even if you believe that they might be able to produce it in a carbon neutral way one day...it will still produce polution from the tailpipe...... dont forget that all the ever multiplying ULEZ zones care about is polution... not carbon output..... so they might still be unusable for a chunk of the population.

Been through this 1000 times. The clue is in the word NEUTRAL.

When the CO2 reduction emphasis is reduced the pollutants that ULEZs care about (NOx and PMs) can more easily be reduced if not entirely eliminated.

Oh but they can be entirely eliminated... from urban areas anyway..... the clue is in the subject line of this thread ;)

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Reduce engine out (by more innovative engine designs) emissions and after treatment can be simpler and completely effective. At least the EU makes provision for the possibility. Which is more than can be said for the UK. Cutting off its over-sensitive nose to spite its face.

You have to wonder though, how much more complicated and expensive will the emissions control systems be on ICE cars to meet the EU7 standard, compared to the already complicated and expensive emissions control systems required to meet the EU6 standard (and the AdBlue debacle is a case on point) - and for what aim? Whem a much simpler electric motor solves all the problem of exhaust has emissions in one go.

(I can understand the current issues around EV range, but the industry will resolve this over time, and for the next 12 years new car buyers who need the longer range of Diesel cars can continue and but them).

As I have said countless times, what I'm advocating for is a new breed of engines - with new fuels to not take that opportunity would be idiocy - where the engine out emissions are so low as to make the expensive and complicated external control systems redundant.

Once more, because EVs aren't suitable for all, geopolitical dependency, that they are still not carbon neutral (until all electricity is from renewables, etc, etc, etc. The list is long.

Why wait when ICE is here and only needs different fuels? More to the point, why all the eggs in the one basket? Fools gold?

Currently, we have ICE cars running on Diesel oil, ICE cars running on petrol, BEV running on electricity from the grid, and potentially also FuelCell cars running on Hydrogen. You seem to be are advocating the development of a fifth type of engine - with yet another different type of fuel to the other four? Again, for what aim? Do we really need a fifth basket? Keeping in mind that Diesel and petrol ICE cars will be with us for another 10-15 years at least, after the 2035 ban.

LPG still lurks.

Biodiesel might still lurk.

We used to have NGV in some markets - though I haven't seen that mentioned for a while.

And in WW2 there was use of gas.

Maybe the most flexible solution is to have a BEV vehicle with a moderate size battery - and provide various generator options for range extension trailer units. So we could have a battery trailer, a diesel trailer, a petrol trailer, a LPG trailer, a gas turbine multi-fuel trailer ..... possibly a nuclear trailer.

Engines have always evolved - often due to legislation. The legislation has changed, so the engine should evolve also. Eg, what qualities are desired in alternative carbon neutral fuels (octane, volatility, etc) and in conjunction to ease fuel development, compatible engines.

Some of us are looking beyond 2035 and not least as what is pending is already impacting us. That, and the fact that as of now EV cannot compete with ICE on range, price, usability, etc. Backing solely the currently losing horse and crippling the race winner is plain stupid. Darwinian even.

I really like this new 'in wheel motor' technology for up coming EV's.
I just wonder when they will realise the significance of an additional 40kgs of unsprung weight per wheel?
Tyre construction and damping is going to have to take major leap forward if we are on enjoy the ride quality we can at the moment.
