Unmarked Police Cars

Did they know you were taking that photo when you were sitting in the back of the car John ? ;)

I'm now typing this from a nice cosy padded cell

No second rear view mirror and no big video camera. The bikes are really subtle.

How did you manage to take them whilst handcuffed, sprayed with pepper spray and had a tazer shot ? Impressed..... :D

I always thought the police video camera was clearly visible, but this is a picture of the interior of a Devon & Cornwall Police vehicle. The camera is allegedly in the rear view mirror?? Top right corner of the mirror.

We shouldn't forget that the police also use unmarked motor-cycles, the latest down here is a Yamaha FJR1300/A

Another point is the very small number of traffic units, marked or otherwise. For the whole of South Devon we are talking of a traffic unit containing just four cars. That is four cars in total, one of which will possibly be unmarked.

John

Oop! pix edited off.

The unmarked Silver VRS on the M3 tops out at 159mph.

Is that all? The one that passed me on my encounter with one seemed to be going a lot quicker than me, I'd have guessed at 165-170, though of course it's difficult to tell when you're only doing 70

170?!! Even the police aren't that daft, and I'm quite sure the Skoda can't attain that kind of speed.

I've been 150 in an albeit marked Volvo, and 135/140ish to 150 was very slow and took quite a distance to achieve on a relatively empty motorway. It was very noisy and started to feel a wee bit unstable

All of the above are correct. What I also look for the registration of the car. If it older then 3 years old then I know it not a police car because they don't keep cars over 3 years old.

When I was caught in 1998, they disguised it with double rear very long radio aerials and white hard hats on the parcel shelf.

If there is only one person ie the driver, I know it not a police car.

To be on the safe side drive within the speed limit if you can.:D
Old blue v6 mondeo used in Torbay. Aerials on roof and blue lights behind front grille, goes like whatsit of a shovel.

Passed motor-cycle in layby on A38 Plymouth with speed camera on tripod manned by PC. Sneaky sods.

More unmarked Police Bikes

Hopefully I will not get arrested for posting this picture.

Note how the officers are in uniform! That is so they can stop speeding motorists  :)

 :) Pet hate. The A38 is one of the safest, if not the safest road in Devon, yet for the last six months there has been a campaign on this highway against speeding motorists. In theory I don't object to this, but in reality I would love to see these camera's outside our schools or shops, and that is exactly where they are noticeable by their absence.

Regarding the unmarked cars in Devon, be aware these vehicles get swapped every couple of months, so today's blue car might be tomorrow's yellow one!

John

They are not speed cameras on the tripod they are numberplate recognition cameras that take and check the car details
Will that equipment fit into a motorcycle? I have absolutely no idea and am very politely asking as the ANPR stuff I have seen was very bulky. (I'm picturing a Harley Davidson hog with trailer) :)

I'm not a one to gossip but here are some minutes regarding the purchasing of said motor bike, the very last paragraph refers:

Speed detection.
It is known that excess speed for the circumstances is the most frequent cause of motorcycle collisions and this makes speed enforcement appropriate. This can be carried out by the Safety Camera Partnership by planned deployments on pre-signed routes. It could also be carried out in conjunction with the Force Motorcycle Wing. G*** H***S gave an example of an operation conducted in another force whereby motorcycles were stopped subsequent to being detected by enforcement vans so as to positively identify the rider and to explain the reasons behind the enforcement. This operation was regarded as being responsible for significantly reducing the casualty figures amongst motorcyclists in that particular force.
The arrival of the new motorcycle fitted with the speed detection equipment is awaited.

That I do not know John,, there is no reason why a car drops the stuff off and leaves it too the biker.
Speed cameras have to be focused onto a vertical surface, ie Number plate.
These numberplate cameras are often at the end of the A30 near the airport. They were on the 303 last week.

The thing is with these is that no attempt is made to hide /disguise them and it done in the open.

The interesting thing though is to see how all the cars slow up when aproaching these things, I first thought oops on the 303 doing 75mph then you remember that speed cameras have to be held.

Sorry to go on about the picture of the unmarked Golf... but... if the police were really that bothered about people not knowing it was a police car why is the driver wearing uniform... if it was some sort of anti-terrorist (!) car as someone has suggested I think the driver would be wearing jeans and a t-shirt!!

I'm sure there are 'covert' cars about conducting undercover work which you and I would know nothing about... I don't think unmarked traffic cars fall into that catagory.

Further to that I would like to know which law has apparently been broken by the person taking the photo... if it is in a pubic place there is no law to stop anyone taking a photo of anything and doing what they want with it.

It certainly appeals to my wicked sense of humour.

Technical equipment set-up on a tripod resting on the back of the bike.

I have visions of a car flying by and PC Plod (one 'D') very neatly, and very methodically tidying all this equipment back into the panniers, putting on their gloves, make-up etc, then firing their trusty steed into action and riding off in 'hot persuit' (well tepid persuit) :D

I have just read an extremely informative directive regarding illegal number plates and Plodd is 100% innocent

regards
John

Edit
Regarding Edthedead's query
To stop a vehicle a police officer has to be in 'uniform' You decide what is or is not uniform

Certainly the plethora of people that have been and will be pulled and ticketed by the car know it, so I think the fact it is an unmarked car does not hide the fact it is a Police car for very long, if you are on the wrong side of the law or have raised suspicion ;)

Yes, all this tin foil hat hysteria saying "covert" cars shouldn't be "unmasked" on t'internet is absolute toot.

The cars that have been posted, and indeed, the only cars you would recognise as police are "unmarked" not "covert". The local crims are well aware what they are, and their only purpose is to maintain a thin element of surprise- Until they light up like a Christmas tree!

Truly "covert" vehicles are an entirely different matter. No lights, no uniforms, and on a need to know basis. For the sake of DaveK and his conpiracy theories, they are... EVERYWHERE, and you would NEVER KNOW...:D
