Unmarked Police Cars

Yes, all this tin foil hat hysteria saying "covert" cars shouldn't be "unmasked" on t'internet is absolute toot.

The cars that have been posted, and indeed, the only cars you would recognise as police are "unmarked" not "covert". The local crims are well aware what they are, and their only purpose is to maintain a thin element of surprise- Until they light up like a Christmas tree!

Truly "covert" vehicles are an entirely different matter. No lights, no uniforms, and on a need to know basis. For the sake of DaveK and his conpiracy theories, they are... EVERYWHERE, and you would NEVER KNOW...:D

Well wouldn't that tend to prove DaveK's theory as being correct?

Just had a few minutes to catch up on this thread - oh dear.

Given the world of mobile phones with cameras and other items of technology, are the police REALLY going to be that bothered with trying to stop every person that they believe might have taken a photo of them and their vehicle and confiscate the phone / camera? I would seriously hope that they have better things to do with their rather more valuable time. So being informed of a few people chatting about unmarked police vehicles is probably as about exciting to the police as visiting our local Home Bargains which I can assure you is very dull.

Found a picture of an unmarked police car on t'Internet so hopefully I will not get re-arrested for posting it?

I may get into trouble for this, but I happen to know there is a Mk II Jaguar (a sort of dull red colour) that patrols the Oxford area. You would never guess it's a cop car - even down to the grim classical music blaring out the open windows.

I saw it once on one of those Police! Stop documentaries on TV.

A fair point, albeit trivial

- We had that bloke down stairs. He was convinced his shoulder blades were deformed. He spent hours looking at them in the mirror. By the time he'd finished, they were deformed.

The Met. park marked and unmarked cars along William IV Street in London, right next to the main Post Office. They all have the same vehicle logbook folder thingy left in clear view on top of the dash (to stop them being ticketed?), so they're obviously not remotely interested in keeping the unmarked ones secret. Many of them (both marked and unmarked) are red, which I think signifies Diplomatic Protection Group.

Don't these police fly on the wall type programs highlight unmarked police vehicles? Our police headquarters sometimes hold open days and put on display numerous assets including vehicles from the traffic department, both marked and unmarked.

I think the argument for having these vehicles is to observe driver habits when not under the eye of 'plod'. Are we really bothered about this? Do we really care?:) are we seriously suggesting we would get arrested for posting the picture of a police car? :D :D

My original intention was to glean a few tips on how to recognise the unmarked cars, so thanks all for your tips. I've certainly learnt a fair bit.

For my part I would always be interested to know if there was an unmarked police car in my neck of the woods and in any other part of the land for that matter. As many have said, the local forces change them from time to time, so updates would be useful. Good to know what to look out for (before it's too late).

For what it's worth, I see no reason why the Police would object to posts or even pictures of their cars. Why should they? The deterrent is the knowledge that they might be on your stretch of tarmac!

Anyway, in the interest of simplicity and as this thread has a fair bit of other stuff in it, I'll start another thread, which could perhaps just contain sightings? If you'd like to contribute to it, I'd appreciate it. If not, there's no harm done to anyone:)

Will people be posting pictures of Store detectives on here as well ?

Unmarked or marked store detectives?

On a similar but unconnected note, a young gentlemen working as a cashier in Costco this afternoon almost became a marked cashier from previously being an unmarked but slightly unwashed cashier.
