W124 Donor strip

Thanks very much Adam. The tyre tip too. I have Bridgestones on the back of my 124 Saloon.
On a whim I had it decatted ((rear)(this my 124 24V 300D)) and seeing as the middle box was getting tatty that was removed at the same time. Perhaps a mistake when looking for quiet cruising but boy does it sound "rorty" when pushed. The back box does rasp a bit as it tries to handle the straight through stuff when moving on. That can be attended to in time.

Are you refering to cat converter ?

If so, there may be some bad news around the corner for you and others that have performed a decat.

New MOT regs are due in Jan 2012 that require cars that originally had cats fitted, (even those cars prior to 1992) to have the cat fitted at test, or else a fail.

Yes I have read that the roof is worth doing but I did not fancy removing the headliner. Also I think mercedes have some deadening mat installed there at the factory.

I would say the the bulkhead behind the seats gives the best results. As you say it is very thin and acts like a drum.

Also I put some on the front bulkhead (engine side) and this definitely made a difference.

Although not very scientific I think it was all worth it as each piece reduced the noise slightly. If repeated I may not have bothered with the mat on the floor under the front seats as this section has many strengthening ribs that stop vibration.

I might later add some barrier mat foam laminate under the seats and around the transmission tunnel but there is not much space. Also the driver's foot well has no sound proofing where the steering column comes through which is surprising.

One thing to bear in mind this stuff is heavy. I recon I have added at least 50kg!

Cheers Adam,

The footwell on the 124's where the column goes through the firewall has some sound deadening properties in the form of a heavy duty type rubber material. Its quite dense in material.

The thing is once you start on the floor pan i certainly found loads of other areas that can benefit. Its a question of where to draw the line really.

I do want to do the two doors for sure. However I will leave the rear quaters i.e. the quater where the rear windows are un molested.

It will be the entire floor pan, boot well, boot quater panels, boot lid itself, doors, rear shelf deck and rear bulkhead where the seats go.

That will leave me just the back end of the roof to consider as the sunroof covers the front.

Always happens to me!! Ill take my luck at the next MoT test which is due in August.Time between now and then to save up for a new middle box and cat.
