W204 Steering lock mechanical fault diagnosed

Was that a completely new ignition lock unit coded or did they replace the motor in the old one, as that is a superb price, I paid more than that for the part alone

The company that did it was www.ogsmechanics.com ,www.carkeyssolutions.co.uk

They replaced the motor and there is a one year warranty on the work.

Yes , it is true that you can buy the motors from £11 - £30 on ebay, however, from what I am aware you need to run some software up on the ESL and there is a process you have to follow before you open it up or else you destroy the unit.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYsBxxOXoA4

You also have to get the steering lock out, strip it out, put the new motor in, reassemble and get it back in.

It took about an hour and half to do.

As far as I am concerned, it was better to spend the money and have this sorted before I got stuck somewhere. That would have left me at the mercy of either MB or it would have been a case of hunting down an Indie or specialist who could fix the fault, having to transport the car and paying a lot more than I did.

I have the old motor here and the guy that did the job showed me that the old motor would have definately packed up as the worn motor brushes were making the back cover of the motor go black.

Have you noticed a difference in steering unlocking speed, ie when you put your key in?

To be honest, because I wasn't looking looking for this issue in my car and it didn't suffer from this problem, I can't say that I have noticed any difference. It was fairly instant before the motor was replaced.

This has been a useful thread and we finally got to the root of the problem that causes the huge bills when the steering lock goes wrong. Bottom line seems to be that in most cases it's the 2 bit motor that MB used which doesn't last the distance.

To be honest I hate the unnecessary over complexity built into recent cars and the only saving grace is that there are very clever independent people out there that can figure a way around the problem. No doubt that if they had clever enough people and weren't just out to rob their customers an MB dealer could do the repair at a fraction of the price as well.

Attached is a picture of the motor that was removed....note the blackened out rear of the motor.

Looks like something that came out of a train set or toy car !

Mercedes Benz Dartford Fraudulent Repair!

Ok, so I picked my car up today, and I am £1,036 lighter in the wallet!

But guess what, I decided to check my onboard dash cam, and low & behold I discovered something very disturbing! Weve all read on the forums how some people have fixed their steering lock problem using a mere hammer, well guess what, Mercedes Benz main dealers also utilise this method, check out my video on YouTube and hear the MB mechanic boasting how he has fixed my car with a HAMMER! He says "I fixed it mate, I fixed it with a hammer, brand new that is, I fixed that now, happy days, I just started battering it!".

Ive emailed MB HQ and I am awaiting their response, I also made MB Dartford aware that Im on to them, awaiting a call on Monday from the branch manager.

Ive also attached a copy of the invoice.

The video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUfE5devYcA

Will be nice to have your thoughts guys?

I rather like the £13:50 (before VAT) to remove and replace the battery earth lead.

I would take them to the cleaners and get every penny out of them you can. I would also contact honestjohn the motoring correspondent in the daily telegraph. Name and shame. I hate to say it but I think this type of thing happens daily in most garages around the country. Pay peanuts and get monkeys springs to mind.

Pay peanuts at a main dealer? love it when dash cams etc become invaluable in such circumstances. I would expect a full refund!! absolute rip off.

I meant the dealers paying their staff peanuts compared to the labour rates they charge us.

I find this fascinating. Long may it continue for us independents.

Giving the steering lock a thump is quite common to release it. I wouldn't use a hammer though!

As soon as I hear from either MB HQ or MB Dartford I will post their response here, this is going to be very interesting to see their lame excuse for this one, probably that the Mechanic is new or on training, probably on a collar & lead and fetching tennis balls!

W204 Salers Visual Health Check?

I just had a look at the Visual Health Check that MB Dartford issued along with their fraudulent repair bill, and Im a bit curious about their reccommendation of new tyres, check out the photos and give your opinions? The rears were fitted last year and have done around 7,000miles.
