W221 S Class - COMMAND not functional - no audio but nav works

I've found quite a few so far, from eBay and various Mercedes breakers mainly in London, I just need the specialist to get the part number off it.

There are many, many part numbers.

This is a list I got. Not sure how accurate.

A 221 820 57 89
A 221 820 67 89
A 221 820 68 89
A 221 870 15 89
A 221 870 17 89
A 221 820 87 89
A 221 870 50 89
A 221 870 77 89

What are the prices you've found?
I can't see any on eBay.

The dealer gave me the last part number as the one for my car. I think that is the current one and there are older versions. I had the same issue with some bixenon headlamps.

And the prices ive found on ebay are around £500

Yes, they update the part number as hardware or software changes (and the software is updated as part of installation)

So I guess newer is better. Be careful that you get a fully working one if you get one from eBay. I'd avoid any that have been in a diesel car, especially a chauffeur car which is likely to have sat around for hours with engine running.

PS, it does need coding to the options in your car, and really should have the firmware updated so it matches the firmware in the rest of the audio system

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Harman Kardon amp was one of the very few components on the W221 that does NOT need coding?

Actually Richard, thinking about it, do you do AGW repairs?

Hi, just giving you an update. I have managed to get the part number off my amp which was A221 870 1789 and have got hold of an amplifier with the part number A221 820 6789. I will try and get it fitted and let you know if this fixes the problem.

Can you PM me where you bought it from please?
I've been trying but no luck so far.

I don't think water damage caused it to stop working because there is a vent next to the amplifier to allow air to get to cool it. When the car is idling the exhaust gases travel up through the vent and into the amplifier. Over time this causes the amplifier fan to clog up and stop working thus causing the amplifier to overheat and destroy itself.

Maybe but my fan definitely still works, and I've dismantled the amp - it's pretty clean inside, except a little bit that looks like mineral deposits on the PCB/IC. And that's why I think it's water damage.

Wiping off the deposit and cleaning the dust didn't bring it back to life.

Maybe there's just more than one reason.

Just recieved some good news from the Indy and the sound is now working with no problems at all and I can confirm that he needed to reprogram the amplifier.

Just an update.

I've managed to sort mine out - by replacing the amp (Audio Gateway). The new one has a slightly newer model number. The old one is A2218206789, the new one is A2218208789.

After months and months of looking, I finally found a second hand one that is of a reasonable price and from a place with a return policy.

The process of replacement is tricky, as in it's really awkward to pull things in and out. But it's not difficult by any means and can be done by anyone with a bit of DIY experience.

I would upload the instructions but the PDF file size exceeds the max limit.

I did NOT have to reprogram. And as far as I know nobody should need to.

I still think that it's caused by water damage from opening the boot, and having the water running through the groove next to the number plate, along the arm and into the hole, onto the top of the amp.

Hope this thread helps someone with the same problem in the future.

Thanks everyone for the help.

EDIT -

By the way I recently found a repair service on eBay in the Eastern Europe for the Audio Gateway that sounds very promising and is reasonably priced.
I have not used them so I can't comment on how good/bad they are, because I only found them right after I've replaced the amp.
But if I didn't replace the amp I would have given them a go.

You should ensure the whole system has a firmware update after changing any component including the AGW/HK amp because there is different software levels and its not guaranteed that unless everything is at same level that it will work as designed

But the reality is that it

Rwill work being just swopped over as almost all the config is held in the COMAND head unit.

Thanks
