What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

Rebuilt the mirrors on my wife's A170 w169. Indicators were intermittent on both sides and one side had no heating. Second time I've done this repair due to the poor design breaking the wires through constant bending when the mirrors fold. New sections of wire soldered into place sorted it ....for now at least.

I took one for a spin, and vacuumed two of them - the first time I have vacuumed a car in almost 20 years, and I did two in quick succession! Strangely I really enjoyed it!

I’ve even left the same two cars out on the drive as I plan to wash them tomorrow! There’s time for this new found enthusiasm for cleaning cars to fade though!
Well I didn’t wash those two last weekend - and I still haven’t either! However today I throughly cleaned another two inside and outside, to make sure that as much of the winter grime as possible has been properly removed.

It took a solid 8 hours of non-stop work, and I’m really feeling it now - I’m aching all over! I really wouldn’t want to earn my living as a mobile valeter it must be seriously hard work. No wonder that many focus on machine polishing and era mix coatings from a unit these days.

Yesterday, for the second weekend in a row, I washed both cars by hand to get rid of Saharan sand.

Today I'm going empty all the junk out of the glovebox, the central cubby and the wheel well of the Merc ready for Comand Online on Friday.

I woke the R170 from winter hibernation and took it for a drive. First chance to experience the new steering linkage, exhaust, prop shaft centre bearing, front spring perch, front springs and brake pipes throughout. Feels like a new car.

I drove it much much much further than I had intended to. It was a nice day and it would have been a shame not to enjoy it. I got a bit carried away though and was too far from home to make it back comfortably for dinner so I used manual mode for a spirited drive home, and it reminded me just how capable that car is.

Heard a bit of a knock when I turned the CLK steering , I had changed the outer track rod ends about 3 years ago, so I’ve gambled and ordered some Lemforder inner track rod ends for £40 . Coming up to 90k miles I’m sure they won’t be money wasted anyway .
The mot is in a couple of weeks so I might change them before if there is a warm sunny spell , or wait and see what the mot says ? I only want to get the front tracking done once so I’ll give it some thought

S124, new rear subframe suspension points welded on as well as repairs to the rear sway bar mounts and a few rusty bits cut out and fresh metal put in. New inner and outer bushes, new rear springs, new rear tyres. Unsurprisingly the ride home was a vast improvement

The MOT I had done to-day passed but has two advisories. One front tyre cracking and one rear cracking. The guy said they were OK for another year as I do a comparatively low mileage, just under 3,000 miles over the last year. :)

So it's new tyres all round in the very near future. It currently has Nexen N'Fera SU1 as factory fit and they have done everything that I wanted them to do. Despite what other members may think they have been very good. :)

As I need all four it broadens my options somewhat as to what to go for. Pirelli's are out because they are too noisy, I had P Zero's on my W204 and although the wear rate was brilliant along with the noise there also was the cracking problem.

Budget tyres will definitely not be a consideration. My first thought is to go for Conti's. I had them on my VW Eos years ago and was impressed by them. I think my main requirements are quietness, wet grip, side walls that offer protection from kerb rash and longevity. :)

A service on the old battle cruiser

Washed the E class for MOT day tomorrow :) .
MOT seems to have gone up a bit this year, I seem to remember it was £31.00 last year, this year it was £40.00 ! :(

£54.85 to be precise!. I always worry that the discount MOT places are looking a bit harder to find issues to make up for the discount MOT price! To do an MOT properly takes about an hour so to charge thirty or forty quid minus costs does not leave you much profit. But I always pay the full charge anyway as the nearest MOT place is literally 200 yards from my house....so worth the extra cost for the convenience!

Haha, I had mine done at Quickfit and guess what the advisories were on :D
