What MPG are people getting?

So after a 109 mile round trip this morning in subzero temperatures I managed to average 50.5MPG. Mainly at 70 but had a fair bit of motorway that was 50mph.

E300 Hybrid

Average around 47mpg but when in France last year 55mpg with car fully loaded.
This is according to the on board read out. I have never achieved anything like the advertised mpg but to be honest I never expected to.
My normal drive is mostly rural B roads and I know that with more care and making better use of the hybrid drive that I could achieve better.

I'm pretty much only using BP Ultimate (97RON) now, it maybe in my head, but I can tell the difference in the smoothness of the engine, and I've decided (without any evidence) that this must mean the mpg improvement pays for the higher pump price.

With the drop in fuel prices the percentage differential is increasing while the actual difference remains the same. The last time I looked it was about 10p per litre difference. I don't think I will be going 10% further on a tank of 97RON but if fuel was £2 per litre I would only need to go an extra 5% to break even.

Friday afternoon motorway commute home....

  • about 12 miles into my journey showing mid 30's
  • just over 20 miles into my journey showing low 40's
  • at 32 miles into my journey displaying low 50's
  • when finished at 42 miles displaying 58.4MPG
Seldom check - but yesterday was a funny day with the cold weather and the trip meter caught my eye when showing low 30's after about 10minutes into my journey.

Brim to brim is generally mid 50's.

I'm going to keep a keen eye on the fuel usage over the next few months. Maybe it's just me getting used to driving a larger heavier car that doesn't seem as nimble as the Scirocco so info sometimes compensate with a heavier foot.

E500 Saloon 2002 19" Cls AMG Wheels : 17 mpg
L322 4.4 Range Rover Vogue 2002: 13 mpg
C32 AMG Estate 2002 22 mpg
2010 MWB Sprinter 313 26 mpg

These are mixed driving results, i have seen high 20's from the e500 on M6 North of Lancaster and low 30's from the C32 on MWAY and strangely get better consumption from th sprinter in rural driving can get 30 mpg, but on MWAY 25-26. The figures for vans are never achevied unless you can stay 6" behind a HGV!

Just read the first post on this topic, ignore me ive spent to many hours on the road.

Not really mainly at 70...your average speed is as shown...54mph.

We do have these questions now and then, about MPG,of course people would like to know what their car is doing, the ONLY way to check is to pick a local filling station, use the same pump, you will all have noticed that the pumps spout is the same design all over the country and on the underside of the spout you have two ridges, put the spout right into the filler, fill until it clicks, pull it out to the first ridge and continue to fill until the handle clicks, the car is full,or I should say for the testing of MPG it is full reset the trip and drive, then repeat at the same pump and then get the calculator ,it is the only way to get a accurate MPG

I agree if trying to accurately judge the short term MPG of a vehicle. On the other hand if you record every litre put in a car over a period of many years then that makes for an accurate enough average regardless of how and where fuelled. What can't work accurately is members here comparing their MPG because there are too many variables whether it's rates of acceleration, traffic conditions or hilly country vs flat.

For what it's worth I use a different method of measuring fuel added and that's to run down to reserve and then add a set amount and back to reserve again. Any inaccuracy in this method is no worse than the variability of filling a tank at different filling stations where the vehicle is not always dead level (which I know your method accounts for).

This being my my first vehicle with a displayed MPG, what surprised me is how remarkably close to the measured MPG it is - usually within 1 MPG. But that's another variable and it may not be the case for others.

W210 e300 to 33mpg mixed.
R170 230k always seems to do 27mpg, again mixed.
Biggest surprise is the w124 superturbodiesel which can really use diesel if you are brutal, but on long trips I regularly see 38mpg, which is superb for a car with 450bhp.

33 mixed for the e300td is good going. Have you done any mods?

Not been able to check the fuel cycle yet as the car has been in the garage for the last week :-( very annoying.

When I took my SL in for service the dealer gave me a 65 C220 cdi as a loan car. Drove from Chesterfield to Sheffield via A617 and M1. I achieved without trying 61mpg which I thought was very good. However a month or so later took my S500 for service, this time they gave me a 65 C200 petrol. Did the same trip to Sheffield at the same time of day and got 67mpg. With advancement in petrol engine cars why do people buy a diesel car?
I was very impressed with the C200 almost as smooth as my S500, not as quick though.

I run a 2008 C class 220CDI 6 speed manual. On the school run and around town with short 2 mile runs and a stop before returning I get 39 to 41 mpg. On the motorway runs I have no difficulty getting 50 or even 60mpg. The most I have had, so far is 67mpg on the motorway runs. Al this from a 150,000 miler.

With a new thermostat fitted our w210 e320cdi now does 43mpg on a run up from 38mpg so I'm happy

Would a faulty MAF or thermostat throw up any error codes? I do think my car may have an issue and it is with Mercedes at the moment. So I will mention it tomorrow to them. They've already done a scan on the car which hasn't brought anything up.

34 mpg after a fuel mixture adjustment and a set of new Michelin energy savers over 360 kms. Quite pleased with that, especially as some of it was not exactly economy driving. :)
