Why Hide Registration Number Plates

Actually MB used sales sort of do. They put their own blank plate over the front plate in the first photo but then usually leave the rear exposed (so to speak). They then go further and show the registration number in the advert. Weird really.

Can you tell that I have been car shopping?

I imagine the reason is to make used cars look like new on the forecourt? :dk:

I do (virtual) window shopping all the time ;)

I'm not sure Ant, my car browsing tends to be 3 year old so seems a bit pointless.

However, you never know with car dealers.

Putting the number into AskMID and the Halfords website is a useful thing to do when the advert is less than clear about the exact model and engine.

All they have to do is look at any car in the street ( or car park / garage forecourt ... )

Suppose you are a dodgy geezer with a blue E320 estate that you want a fake registration for which will pass a basic check for make/model/colour.

A quick search on the web (adverts, owner forums, etc.) is a much easier way to find a suitable candidate for cloning than hoping to find one out on the streets.

Not all traders mask the plates.... MB Approved Used don't. BMW Approved Used don't. Audi Approved Used don't. Etc.

MBAU certainly used to - this is my SL at MB Eastbourne

Theres a thread on PH where this very thing happened.

Someone wants to nick a C63 AMG in black that they have seen around the corner. They need to a clone a plate so that they can drive it without any issue.

10secs on Google: LG60 FGF Get plate cloned, drive around without any issues for a couple of days.

See this:

I guess because they are generally displayed with the front of the car visible to passers by, and not the back.
