1/2" Impact Wrench Recommendations

Very informative, thankyou. Does the 6850 have Ni-Cads and the 7850 Li-ion?

May not be as good as the Snap On etc but at that price be a good one to keep in the car!

Just found this, seller bought from a friend who was desperate for some cash

Snap-On Lithium Ion Ct7850 18 Volt Cordless 1/2" Impact Gun In Extreme Green | eBay

Approx 4 months old

Looks like a good buy :thumb:

Ignore what it looks like, it's the intrinsic quality you should worry about.

Rugged 'sounding' or 'looking' no-name ebay tools will end up in the dustbin usually after a few months of use. Especially heavy use/complex items like power tools. Cheap quality gears, casings, batteries etc make them throwaway items. Probably a couple of drops on the floor or a few weeks use will render it broken.

I'd either buy that snap-on or spend the cash on breakdown assistance instead - no need to worry then :)

I just tested my dewalt 18v compact Impact wrench, it will will undo 130Nm wheel bolts ok without having to crack the bolt with a breaker bar. I don't think it will undo a heavily over tightened bolt though. My model is the DC820...
DC820B 1/2" (13mm) 18V Cordless Impact Wrench (Tool Only) | DEWALT Tools
And is quoted as having a max torque of 195Nm

So if you were to go with the full size deWalt DCF889 which has over 2.5x the max torque of the compacts at 540Nm, I would say you would be ok...

The Milwaukee Impact wrench's have more power 610-950Nm and come with a 3year warranty compared to 1 year dewalt. Then there's Makita and Hitachi too.

I think you'll be safe with any of the main good makes that have over 400Nm.

Personally for an Impact wrench I wouldn't buy used off eBay. I think you run too much risk of it being abused, stolen or both.

cheers, Steve

I hope it wasn't someone on here who out bid be :thumb:

Not guilty, although I suspect being that these are popular tools and it's cheap it will probably get more bids before the auction ends anyway!

Maybe set yourself a limit and bid right at the end, stops other people pushing the price up :)

Don't worry, I only ever place one bid...until the last 3 secs and then BAM! lol

As above, if the end time is convenient for you, work out your limit and then with about 30 secs to go place you next bid. Just remember to allow time for bid confirmation screen. Then leaving eBay to auto bid up yo your limit. Doesn't stop automated bots biding against you, but it normally takes out any manual bids where people are watching.

cheers, Steve

Why place the first bid early though? Just makes other people take interest (they are reassured to see others bidding) and pushes the price up higher!

I have a habit of forgetting what is in my watch list, bidding put it at the top of my screen.

I agree with your post though

Use Bid Scheduler (Google it) enter your maximum bid. set the time remaining before you bid (default is 7 secs) you can lower that to 3 secs. Then walk away. If you win, happy days. If you lose, you haven't spent more than temptation made you.

Used to use something similar years back - hammersnipe or hammertap IIRC. But now with ebay app on the iPhone its just as easy to bid yourself :)

So did you win in the end, or did the price go above your limit?

I decided to update my impact wrench and drill at the weekend and went for the Milwaukee M18 Fuel system. Appears to have good specs and they come with a 3 year warranty. We must be ham fisted over here in Europe, as they offer a 5 year warranty in the US ;) ;)

cheers, Steve

Bit of both really....I could have gone a little higher but I know the highest bidder had upped his maximum so would have been too high. Another reason is my vehicle has gone in for repair, suspect gearbox plate so have to put this on hold until I find out exactly what it is going to cost me :(

I didn't realise this post was so old!

I ended up buying a DeWalt DCF899N

£150 from screwfix
£60 DCB184 battery (latest 5.0ah)
£18 DCB115 charger

950nm of torque, I just have to be careful not to shear anything off!

What with the return of @bob6600 to the forum, and me looking at 1/2" impact wrench recommendations, I thought I would give this thread a bit of a dust off after 10 years.

I've got 18v (20v?) DeWalt tools already, so I'm most likely going to go for a DeWalt bare unit to keep cost down.
The DCFxx2 variants are typically the automotive sprung ball bearing socket fixing, rather than hog rings.

The options seem to be:
DFC922N - very compact, 600Nm breakaway torque and 400Nm of fastening torque.
Amazing price currently of £125 from Power Tool Mate via their eBay store:
DEWALT DCF922N 18v Brushless 1/2" Impact Wrench BODY ONLY | eBay

DCF892 - moderate size, 1150Nm breakaway and 800Nm fastening torque.
Best price currently £199 directly from Power Tool Mate:
Dewalt DCF892N 18v XR Brushless 1/2" Compact Wrench with Detent Pin Naked - PowerToolMate

The beast. DCF900 - reportedly a huge, heavy unit with 1900Nm breakaway and 1400Nm fastening torque. Probably enough to flip the car over.
Best price currently £194 from UK Planet Tools:
DeWalt DCF900N 18V XR Cordless Brushless 1/2" High Torque Impact Wrench Bare Unit
I could guess the DCF897 bought in the previous post is essentially the DCF900, but with 'less torque' because it comes with the 3/4" drive anvil rather than 1/2" drive anvil, and so maybe changes the torque output calculation?
The bodies of these two look the same.

I guess the question is, do you think 600Nm will be enough with some persistence to undo all the bolts on the front suspension arms?
Or am I going to need 1150 or 1900Nm torque to undo the nuts, at potentially the sacrifice of an enormous amount of usability due to the small size of the DCF922N?

After some reading around, it turns out I think the hog ring will be more suitable for my use, which is DCF921N, rather than the detent pin of DCF922N, which requires a tool to depress the pin/ball every time you want to change socket.
So I got the DCF921N for £125 from Power Tool Mate ebay store in the end

Sensible and a good deal . You are right you have to stick with whatever make batteries you already have .
