AMG GT Test Drive

Porsche's Paint to Sample is cheap at a mere £2900

I test drove a Cayenne two months ago at Porsche Guildford. I would like to have ordered one painted Amethyst Metallic (a Porsche colour).

This is considered an "Exclusive" option. I was told that they don't really offer this facility any more as it's a "nuisance".

PTS comes and goes .. but it is available, at least for the sports car range

I found Porsche pretty inflexible actually. On the other hand JLR simply said "what would you like"?

Porsche also does leather to sample

They certainly advertise it, there are even brochures available to download from the website for Cayenne. They just weren't interested at all when I asked.

Where is the Rangie coming from? Please don't say Hunters

I'm going to start using them for servicing and move away from Hunters

I don't think he was implying you have more money than sense, I think he was suggesting you would be stupid to buy such an expensive car and not have it in a colour you like. I think the red will look really good

That's how I read it.

Sorry Andrew if I have offended you as I am not suggesting that you fit that profile in any way. The point I am making is that it is often implied that people who spend such a lot of money on paint are mugs (fools and their money etc). Personally I find it odd to spend such a lot of money on a car and not have it how you want it. After all, you spent a lot of time and money getting your SLS how you wanted it.

Oh :o Seems I was in miserable b@stard mood so apologies as I clearly read it wrong. Oops.

The issue with colour is.....well, me. There are plenty of nice colours and indeed, the grey looks superb. If I was buying used, I'd have been delighted with that grey (as I was with my first SLS). But having a choice? Well, that meant I could have it in red which is the colour I always wanted an SLS in and I've spent the last few months believing Hyacinth red would be fine. In reality, it was superb in some lights, average in others. In other words, not good enough for the money I'm spending.

Which left me a bit stumped as I was emotionally committed to a red car - it's all I ever wanted since setting eyes on the GT. As you can see, I moved between a variety of other options and really did investigate being if I could get a Designo option (painted any colour) but seems MB don't do that unless it's one of their own current paint options. I obviously ended up taking the safe bet with the Fire Opal.

My only concern is that it'll look a bit cheap but then I look at these and hopefully it'll be fine (I'm particularly looking forward to the interior!).....

I'm just worried for you that you will have shelled out a huge amount of money, get the car and decide that you can't live with it. Ok, you might be able to sell it quickly and keep your shirt by being an early adopter. But I can tell you are already not happy and I think you risk not gelling with the car. Bad enough on a 20k new car but on a 100k one? I hope it works out well for you either way.

Oh, and thanks guys for putting up with this the last few days....I've known women choose a pair of shoes faster than this :D

And one more thing......

Rolls Royce want 100k to personalise your seatbelts. I didn't tick that box either.

Is this for real??

The E Class that we have now was meant to be Hyacinth Red, this was based on the pictures of the lovely deep maroon metallic E class in the press images.

Just before we ordered we found that MB Epsom had a used E Class in Hyacinth Red. That's only 25 minutes away, so we drove over and looked at the orange car and decided to order a white one!

This time I've been a bit of geek, last week I ordered a spray can and lacquer in the colour I'd like and I found something to spray, a metal flower vase/water jug type thing. Sprayed badly by me, but enough to know if I like the colour or not, and I do:-) (It's doesn't photograph well).

A bit sad really....

My wife thinks I've gone a little bit daft.

Just think how nice the AMG GT would look in this colour!

Oh I think I'll be OK with the flat red.....I'd have been OK with almost any other colour once the thing arrived and it was all mine! Well, except the Hyacinth maybe as that was just too disappointing. Good job I had the chance to see it just in time eh!

Flat red was the colour on the first promo pictures I saw but in some shots it looked like a different, deeper colour so I (wrongly) assumed I was looking at the metallic version. As time went on I realised this wasn't the case but held my nerve until I had the chance to see it. And the rest....well, you've read it here!

Like it....good plan. And YES, I think some people thought I was mad when I kept saying it looks a bit orangey! It is definitely towards the orangey/browny end of red.

Yes. If you want to spend money on options have a look at RR.

Another rip-off for you. My Morgan 3 Wheeler is one of 50 special numbered editions and you can choose the number on the dash plaque. The cost? 500 quid. And the irony is that the number bears no relation to when your car was finished i.e number 50 isn't the last one made. So that is 500 quid on a car with a base price of 34k. Outrageous.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the fire opal. It goes well with the red detail in the cabin and looks generally quite mean

That colour is lovely

Have you ordered it on that car too? :thumb:

It's lovely isn't it, it's a Dragon 88 special edition from 2012. It even came with real gold AM badges and gold thread embroidery. The monied Chinese likes that kind of detail apparently.

Mrs Red's wheelchair wouldn't fit very well though:rolleyes:

The configurator is working at last so we can all play with colour matching again.

Not had time to read all the posts but, whatever you do Palmball, don't order flat red, it's crap ........ Oh ........ But ........... Wait a minute

...... Just teasing mate. It will look sensational. The colour is irrelevant, the car is the star no matter what the colour. Well done and congrats :thumb::thumb:
