Another newbie - C63 AMG Coupe

It wasn't highlighted on any of my service docs ?
It does on the data card also run the vin to find out if it had the option 471 (lsd) as most owners-dealers thought it was standard ,I wasted many miles looking at cars which weren't as described 😳
Mine is on the receipts for service and the Diff is mentioned as well!

Here's a few service docs

Noticed an acrid burning sort of smell after driving the car the last few days. Got my borescope camera out and had a look around the cylinder heads, found what appears to be oil gathered around at least one of the torx bolts on the passenger-side bank and a dark patch on the exhaust manifold underneath it. Does this suggest I have the common leaking valve cover gasket issue? Is this a difficult and/or expensive fix?

Easy job buddy and rewarding too👍

Parts wise you"ll need the valve cover gasket, it's about £21 each side. It's also best to renew the spark plug rubber seals that mate between the valve cover to the head, their about £6.55 each, need 4 on each bank, so 8 altogether if doing both banks.

The tork bit size is T30, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. The hardest part is reaching the tork bolts on the underside near the exhaust manifold side. I remember using a shorty T30 bit size on the rear and the underside due to a very tight space on the near side.

Thanks - isn't the issue that the plastic valve cover cracks and needs replaced too? Quick Google suggests they're about £330 each?

OK thanks - in that case I'm definitely going to push the dealer to get it sorted.

They shouldn't crack on their own but if the covers had been previously opened, refitted and over torqued, then its possible the plastic around the bolts area could crack. I think the same applies with the metal covers too, it's very thin.

They do crack on there own just order a new 1 dont bother with just the gasket it will be cracked I guarantee it I've still got my cracked 1 in the garage and if you looked at it you wouldn't see the crack
Ps its always the passenger side aswell 🙂

Interesting, if it's equally and not overly torqued, it really shouldn't crack but i suppose it could be just the plastic becoming brittle. If memory serves me correct, its only needing around 10NM, not much force to hold it in place either. The metal ones are no good, was surprised how thin and fragile they looked. 🙂

I dropped the car off at the garage today - in a cloud of smoke :) Pulled into the car park and saw smoke coming from the passenger side, popped the bonnet and it was coming from that side of the engine. I had seen some oil spots on my garage floor the other night so I guess the leak had gotten worse. The garage (run by a former MB master tech) knew exactly what it was just by my description so with any luck the dealer will stop trying to claim that this is "normal" or "acceptable" now.

I guess I'll be without the car for a little while now though as it sounds like the covers aren't always easy to get hold of.

Thanks for that. Will have to wait and see what the garage say tomorrow, if they say the part is on back order I'll mention that to them.

Stunning! Congratulations on the new purchase. I bet the drive back from the south coast to the north was epic with the thunder of the M156?

Thanks! No not really, it was hours of roadworks from Southampton to Birmingham and mental Easter Bank Holiday weekend traffic up the whole of the M6! Last bit from the border to Aberdeen was a little better though :)

That's unfortunate, oh well summer is around the corner. Plenty of time for some nice drives.

Cheers, yeah looking forward to getting the issues sorted out and getting stuck into it. I wasn't expecting the car to handle as well as it does - sure it's not a Cayman but there's loads of mechanical grip and plenty of driver feedback. Feels far more exploitable than my XKR did.

I hope your getting an LSD fitted if not got 1 already as it totally transforms the car 😀
