Another newbie - C63 AMG Coupe

Yep, from mbdecoder.com:

471 MECHANICAL LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL

Excellent now enjoy when you get it back they sre fantastic cars

I dropped the car off at the garage today - in a cloud of smoke :) Pulled into the car park and saw smoke coming from the passenger side, popped the bonnet and it was coming from that side of the engine. I had seen some oil spots on my garage floor the other night so I guess the leak had gotten worse. The garage (run by a former MB master tech) knew exactly what it was just by my description so with any luck the dealer will stop trying to claim that this is "normal" or "acceptable" now.

I guess I'll be without the car for a little while now though as it sounds like the covers aren't always easy to get hold of.
Hope you get it back in fine fettle soon.

Did you find a good specialist? I didn’t think there were any around.

Cheers, it's getting looked at today so hopefully will hear some good news soon. I've used Westhill Garage, the main guy there is an ex-MB master tech. A friend of mine worked with him when he was a mechanic at the local MB dealer and says he's very good. We used them a couple of times on our old W164 M Class, certainly we were happy with them back then.

I'm planning to use them for servicing going forward as the car has full history, mixed between main dealers and a specialist down south.

Sounds good, I’ve heard good things about them, but I didn’t know the guy was ex MB. It will be in good hands then.

Once you get the initial niggles sorted, you will be able to fully enjoy the car without worry. I don’t know if there’s much of a ‘scene’ up here for MB like there is/was for BMW/Porsche, would be good to meet some fellow owners.

Yeah looking forward to it! Definitely takes the shine off the new car experience when there are things to get sorted out.

I'll pop you a PM once I have the car back, I do like a W205 and part of me was tempted to go that way instead of a 204 but budget didn't quite allow!

There’s always a niggle or two, even when brand new. Will be a distant memory soon enough.

Cool, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the 204, I tried one back when they were current and was blown away by the sound and sheer grunt of that 6.2. Couldn’t find the exact spec I wanted at the time, then got sidetracked into something else. The 205 is nice, but less shouty in its delivery. I wanted a car still under manufacture’s warranty, so that’s the route I had to go.

Get the valve mod if its PFL and has the performance exhaust it shouts then 😃

Oh yeah for sure, just a bit disappointing there are so many in this case. Clearly the previous owner had given up on it!

Niggles aside I am very impressed already, particularly with the handling and feedback. I came from a 550bhp Jag XKR, much more of a GT car but it was a proper missile.

It's a facelift, I guess the earlier cars had active exhaust valves?

Not the 204 I was referring to the w205 exhaust imo the 204 exhaust should be left standard they sound lovely, I've had 2 of them

Ah sorry, got it! I *might* do a secondary cat delete, a little bit more volume at medium RPM would be nice but don't want to be really antisocial.

Picked the car up from the garage today:
  • The oil leak on the passenger-side cam cover they think was just loose bolts so they have cleaned and secured it all. I could still smell oil burning after the 8-ish mile drive home but could just be left over from before. Will monitor.
  • Rumble from rear is suspected badly balanced rear wheels so that's been done. I'll check that tomorrow.
  • Sunroof was lubricated but still no better, to be disassembled and rebuilt.
  • Front brake judder suspect due to very badly worn discs. New discs and pads to be fitted next week.
  • Both front wheels buckled and have bad repairs. Not sure what the plan is there yet.
  • Steering wheel misalignment requires wheel alignment, this will be done once wheels sorted.
Sitting here with a large whisky telling myself it'll all be ok :) The garage said Mercedes don't sell the front wheels any more so that might be a problem. At this rate I can see the car going back...

With all those problems id return the car I can guarantee that they have fobed you off ref the cam cover
But all the other issue's speaks volumes to me and this was bought from a dealer or private?

Try to stay positive. All being well, the dealer has repaired/fixed issue 1 and 2. Made an attempt to fix 3, it hasn't worked so they will go to the next step to resolve the issue. They will be fixing point 4 next week and once answer for 5 is found 6 is an easy and cheap solution.

At least the dealer is trying to help/address the issues raised and hasn't told you it's not thier problem etc. From my limited experience I think because of this you may find it's not as simple as giving the car back. Consumer and sellers rights are a bit of a nightmare and can sometimes go down the small claims court which will cost you an outlay.

I do hope that it gets sorted and I'm sorry to hear this is spoiling the new purchase

Thanks folks! Woke up this morning feeling a bit less glum. Yes it was bought from a dealer in Southampton, I live in Aberdeen so using a local garage to assess the issues and put them right. They are run by an ex-Mercedes master tech, we used them for our old M class a few years ago and they are first class. If they're telling me they don't believe the cam cover is cracked/just needed tightened I wouldn't hesitate to believe them, but they may just be mistaken - we'll see after a few more drives.

So far the dealer has authorised everything to be sorted other than the front wheels. The garage said they are fairly sure they wouldn't pass an MOT, although the car was MOT'd just before sale (possibly the usual pre-sale test done by Stevie Wonder) so I'm not sure what'll happen there. Hopefully they can be straightened and repaired properly, there is a good wheel place near us so I'll ask the dealer about that.

I believe to reject a car you have to give the dealer a fair chance to sort things out first. Not sure if they'd have the right to insist on having the car inspected themselves in person or at a garage of their choosing though which would mean taking it back to Southampton. If it really does come to that then that's what I'll have to do but we're not there yet. The only thing that I think might drag on is the wheels.

You could try the Wheel Specialist in Dyce, they’ve done some work for me in the past and just recently, their standard of work has been great and I’m sure they rectify damaged/buckled wheels, up to a point anyway.

I’d also check eBay for replacement wheels, but after checking with MB parts. Perhaps the car dealer in Southampton would make a contribution towards some front wheels.

Hope you get it sorted either way.

Whilst I agree with the dealer trying to resolve the problems that's better than most but as a new purchase to yourself the problems shouldn't be there in the 1st place .
I do hope its gets sorted/resolved 🙂
