Anyone seen any good number plates on cars lately?

Saw Sir Alan's Roller in London the other day......
Bonus points if anyone can tell me where this photo was taken.
Thats an easy one - Grosvenor Road just along the Chelsea Embankment - literally 500 yards from MB Chelsea!
:bannana:
(edit: wow Chris beat me to it! :( )

Been having a mooch through the archives for information on some of the plates that have been spotted in this thread. Here's some details for a few of them:
_______________________________________________
H 1
1964 - Was owned by Roderick McLeod, an Australian engineer living in London N1, who managed to acquire both the plate and the car it was on for less than £5. McLeod had it on a bespoke Bentley coupé, which had been built to his own design by coachbuilders HJ Mulliner Park Ward. Incidentally, H 1 was originally issued in 1903 to Herbert Nield (later Sir Herbert) who, following his election to parliament in 1906, was responsible for introducing the bill that allowed registration transfers for £5.

1972 - Mr McLeod had moved to Stanmore Common, and the plate was on what looks like a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.

1988 - The owner is listed as Mrs S McLeod, still living in Stanmore Common.

L 1
For many years, this plate was used on the official car of the Mayor of Glamorgan, having been bequeathed to the County Council by Lady Boothby of Fonmon, the neice of the late former owner, Oliver Jones Esq. There's a photo of it on what looks like a mayoral Jaguar XJ6 here, along with another shot of it on an SLK.

Up to around 10 years ago, almost every borough or county council in the UK either owned or had the use of one or more very attractive plates for their mayoral and official cars, but with increased public awareness of the value of these plates, many have now either sold them or given them back to the DVLA to auctioned, often replacing them with Select Registrations. (eg: Bury Council gave back EN 1 and purchased T6 BUR for £250, while Essex famously sold F 1 for £375k.)

JT 1
1964 - it was on a Volkswagen.
1969 - it was on a Fiat 600 in London.
1972 - listed as belonging to a Miss Jean Merrington in London, who was "definitely not interested in selling - at any price."
1988 - it was on a Rolls-Royce in London SW1.

OO 7
1964 - was owned by a Mr Bernard Brooks in Gosfield, and was on a Jaguar E-Type. Seems he was issued with the plate by his local licensing authority in Essex. Mr Brooks commented on how much attention his plate had been attracting since the increased popularity of James Bond generated by the Cubby Broccoli films.

1969 - the number had passed to Belgravia-based Richard Jeffries, then heir to his father-in-law Richard Tompkins' Green Shield Stamp empire.

1972 - listed as part of the collection of GRF Tompkins. OO 7 and L 100 were both on Rolls-Royces, while OO 77 and OOO 7 were both on Aston Martins.

1988 - OO 7 was on a Rolls-Royce in Newbury.
_______________________________________________
U 2
1964 - on a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud owned by Mr Frank Lush, Finchley. He also owned MY 1, which he apparently gave to his friend, Wilfrid Reed.

By 1988, the plate had moved to Preston and the owner (who also had U 4 and U 6) wished to remain anonymous.
_______________________________________________
NOT 1 / BUT 2
1964 - NOT 1 belonged to a Mrs I Sharp in Odiham; BUT 2 belonged to holiday camp king Sir William 'Billy' Butlin, as did BUT 1.

1972 - NOT 1 is listed as belonging to the chairman of Lansing Bagnall in Basingstoke. BUT 1/BUT 2 had passed to Sir William's son, Robert.

By 1988, only BUT 1 was listed as belonging to the Butlin family, and NOT 1 has no details listed.

PAR 1 / 1 PAR / PAR 2 / PAR 3 / PAR 11
In 1988 these were all owned by Gordon Claridge of Berkhamstead, who had various business interests in Lowestoft. He died in the mid 1990s.

The link in the above post is to the gallery of the numberplates.com site, which has hundreds of photos of intersting numbers, including a decent cross-section of the Pimlico Plumbers collection, plus a few shots from years gone by.

A word of caution, though: the captions are often to be taken with a pinch of salt. They seem to have been written by a well-meaning but poorly informed individual, and as a result the howler count is quite high. At first I thought this a deliberate attempt at humour, but the more you read, the more it becomes obvious he/she is just making stuff up in places. Example: the entry for BEL 12E reads: "Another classic initial plate seen here on a Mercedes. Possibly made to read BELRE." In fact, it's allocated to the Belize High Commission.

Worth a look, all the same...

My favourite so far: Two letter initials plates are very effective for people who do not have middle names.

Really? :dk:

I remember seeing '69' - just the two letters - on a BMW 325 Conv in Guernsey while on holiday there about 20 years ago. As a spotty teenager I giggled each time we passed it on our way in and out of our hotel, much to the annoyance of my parents. What would I give to own that one!!

I saw Peter Jones' Mayback at Brooklands today '8PDJ'

The most impressive plate I have ever seen was on a Honda Civic (or similar non descript car, at least 10 years old) based out of Hook Heath (near Woking, Surrey) and simply it was:

H1

On my way to the office this morning, my eyes were met with the somewhat incongruous sight of a young lady extracting a buggy seat from the rear of a Bentley Arnage, registered 30 S. (A quick check reveals that it was actually 3 OS).

Around the corner was a black Mini carrying BG 111.

I saw that car yesterday afternoon! but can't remember where! :wallbash:
It must have been somewhere on the Cromwell Road past the museums, I'm not sure!

It was in Belgravia this morning.
