This one spotted on Memory Lane!
Thirty years ago, when vanity plates were just beginning to catch on, I worked for a firm whose Chairman used to drive around in a large roller.
It sported the plate WLN 1.
I was chatting to him one day and asked what had he paid for the plate; ‘75 pence, Paul’, he said, ‘from Halfords, you never get pulled in this’. He didn’t either. Very pre-internet, that!
His other car was a 450SEL, and I was lucky enough to court his daughter who arrived for our first date driving it. The lad’s with whom I was sharing a hand of cards in our local couldn’t believe it, and double was their amazement when I suggested she might amuse herself with half a lager whilst I finished the game.
Thankfully, she didn’t keep me waiting too long either.
I’ve always had the fondest memories of the W116.

The car belongs to a local resident, and the "nose" is worn permanently to complement the plate. Apparently.

The number famously belonged to Lord Archer. No idea whether it is still his, but I can't really see him driving a turquoise CLK...
