Davo, are you able to put a rough date on this, as I think some confusion may have crept in.

ONE 1 used to belong to Prof. William Mansfield Cooper, who was vice-chancellor from 1956-1970, and by 1988 it had changed hands and was owned by Gerald Fitzsimons, who was Lord Mayor of Manchester for the 1979/80 term; he also owns/owned UNE 1.

The 11th Duke of Devonshire (Andrew Cavendish, who died in 2004) was the university's chancellor from 1965-1986, and incidentally the 12th Duke, Peregrine Cavendish, is currently chancellor of Derby University.

It would be 1977, not sure whos the plate was then. It was someone else who told me it was the Duke's , at the time I had no idea who I was talking to. Nice Daimler though, XJ type body.

Ah, it seems they may have been confusing the chancellor with the former vice-chancellor. Thanks for responding.

Have to say I question the wiseness of a 3 series owner (maybe M3) near me whose number plate is M1 NGE - I haven't figured out whether it's an advert or request ;)

I suspect that plate has been heavily mangled, as the DVLA is not showing any record of M1 NGE, M11 NGE or M111 NGE. M2 NGE is on a 3-series, though...

I have to say the cleverest plate (only cause it took me about a week to work it out!) was V5 ALC on a Ford Focus back in '99.

See if anyone else gets where the geezer was coming from! :)

Maybe it was M2 NGE - it was some time ago - and still a strange thing to advertise !

This on is for The Boss.
